Yes, the movie was much lighter in some respects -- it was, after all, a Hollywood musical. But you are comapring the one movie with an entire series of 14 books. The Wheelers do not appear in The Wizard of Oz, nor do the Bunbury people, nor does Princess Langwidere, nor the Nome King. Those are all from later books in the series. Also, the Scarecrow does not brutally kill 100 crows out of revenge for driving him crazy. A pack of 40 wild crows is sent by the Wicked Witch (who is more than passingly mentioned in the book) in her attempt to do in the four travellers, and the Scarecrow then snaps the crows' necks to save his friends' lives. Also, the political allegory between The Wizard of Oz and the socio-economic times in which it was written is just one theory by one overly-zealous critic, which has been repeatedly proven false. Baum self-admittedly wrote only to please a child. Your exaggeration of gory incidents is somewhat disturbing! But thanks for your enthusiastic post!

Critical
Wizard of OZ books are about the gold standard, littered with metaphors about silver shoes (later changed to ruby slippers in the movie) obviously represented silver and the yellow brick road represented gold. The city of Oz is the abbreviation for ounces, which silver and gold are weighed in. If you follow the gold, it eventually leads you to the emerald city (green paperback money) which is controlled by a lying, scheming wizard who tricks people. He even admits to being worthless after he tries to use Dorothy (who has been following the gold) to off the wicked witch for him. This is paper back money using gold to achieve an outcome only gold can really achieve. Once you learn all the metaphors in the wizard of oz has to offer and especially if youre a currency or fiat currency activist youll fall in love with the genius of Baum and the book.

Here are SOME of the errors in this video (not even all):
0: 28 They were 40 crows, no more than 100. And he killed them in Winkieland in order to save Dorothy, Tin Man and Lion, because the Wicked Witch had sent them to kill them. He never meets again the crows that pestered him. In fact, he is grateful to one of the crows for telling him about brains
1: 15 The political allegories have never been proven to be Baum's intention
3: 35 When he turns people into objects, they enter a dream state, they don't die
4: 05 The flying monkeys are in the first book, they even tell Dorothy how they came to be slaves. The wheelers only appear in the third book

I love Return to Oz better than The Wizard of Oz! Mainly because that Return to Oz is closer to the books than the other. The most dark and twisted thing for me is the fate of Princess Ozma! In the movie Mombi enchants Ozma into a mirror in order to keep anyone in Oz from knowing that she is the true heir to the throne. In the book Mombi transformed Ozma into a boy named Tip when she was an infant! Glinda then forced Mombi to transform Tip back into Ozma before her powers were removed forever. I'm thinking That poor kid is bound to have issues here!

As many have already pointed out, this video is wildly inaccurate. The political allegory was disproved years ago. The MGM movie is based on the first book ONLY. It was the only book that they had the rights to. Disney bought the rights to the subsequent books. So none of the inaccurately related plot points from the later books could have been added anyway. Disappointing that so little research was done. All of this information is widely available on the Internet. Even the books are available to read on the Project Gutenberg website.

Return to Oz is such an underrated movie. It just goes to show you how more scarier and violent the Oz series is. Funny, I never heard of the movie until I was about 14 years old in 2004. My parents got me that movie for Christmas. I watched the crap out of that movie. My two sisters had it on VHS back in the day. They thought it was a horror movie when they watched it as kids back in the early 90s lol

Rest
The movie still has an awful subtext.
At the time of the movie coming out, men were coming back from war. Dorothy had her little adventure, like the women who were able to do jobs they hadn't been allowed to before, but now it's time to wake up, and go back to tending the home.
It subtly told women, Well that was a fun little experiment, back to your place. Pretty rotten in hindsight.

Oh, and by the way, for the people who are saying that they want another adaptation (whether it be more modern/dark/factual etc) should look more into it because there have been countless adaptations made. Couple tv shows, Broadway Musical, Japanese animated mini series, Silent Film, SYFY miniseries focuses on the Tin Man, The Wiz, Oz the Great and Powerful to name just a few.

The Scarecrow DID NOT kill the crows as an act of revenge. As the group was traveling to the Wicked Witch of the Wests kingdom she sent a flock of crows to them to pick out their eyes and kills them. But the scarecrow kills them to save the group.
Yes, the books are more violent than the movie but both are amazing in their own rites.

Most, if not all old fables, were very disturbingly grotesque and violent. Hollywood anf Disney came slongcin yhe twentieth century and clesnef them up to mskr them more palatable to modern audiences.
It would have been interesting though to have sern what Wes Craven or John Carpenter would have done by remaking those originsl stories.

Yes, there was a lot of violence against animals in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Wolves, crows, bees, a wildcat and a huge spider were killed. They died for a good reason anyway, for protecting someone. It is still good that things are removed when the movie version, Wizard of Oz, was made. Violence is not so good to see in family movies.

Prior to making a history video, it would serve you well to educate yourself on the subject you're making the video about. So much inaccuracy here that it's obvious you've never read the books you're trying to talk about. Your credibility just took a big hit and it's your own doing.

Listening to Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the moon Album while watching the Wizard of oz = AMAZING. If you haven't done it you gotta. Just make sure to start them both on the MGM lions 3rd roar (if I remember correctly. Its been a while since I did this.

This was not so great. You mix up several books in which Dorothy plays absolutely no role at all, nor the tin man, the cowardly Lion and the scarecrow. You show scenes of the excellent Return to Oz but do not mention the movie even once.

You should do a video on Garland and her accomplishments as an entertainer. Most people talk about the bad stuff in her life, but I really think her impact on entertainment is not brought up as much as it should be. Thats just me.

Lol. Remember how in the film the Witch says, I'm melting! I'm melting! but really she just. diminishes? In the book she literally melts, like the Nazis in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

To clarify, this mostly describes the series rather than the original book. I read it, and while it is a bit darker, still basically fits the plot of the film.
