Isaac Singer not only improved the sewing machine and started the Singer Sewing Machine Co. He was a Bigamist, he had two wives plus a long term (1836 - 1861) romantic relationship with his mistress of 25 years! His second wife was 30 years younger than him and a French model. He was 19 years old when he married his first wife who was only 15 years old a Miss Catherine Maria Haley. They remained married from 1830 to 1860 until he divorced her charging her with adultery! When their son, William stuck up for his mother in court. Old Isaac cut him out of the will leaving his son only $500 of his amassed fortune of $13 million! In 1875 $13 million is the equivalent of $341, 674, 272. 00 in 2022! Isaac Singer left his son the sum of $500. 00, impeding William Singer from contesting his father is will! Because he wasnt cut out completely it was a ploy from Isaacs lawyers!
Out of those 24 children, 10 died in infancy, unfortunately which was normal for that time. But seriously, with all of that drama going on in his life (2 wives, 1 mistress and all of those children) how the hell did he find time to make the cabinet for the sewing machine or even start his company? (Did Red Bull give him wings) I actually wrote a composition in high school (1975) about Isaac Singer my teacher was appalled she didnt appreciate my subject matter! (Or my sense of humor. There was no Internet back then, I relied strictly on my parents set of Britannica Encyclopedias! I wound up with a C+ for all of my hard work! And when I complained my parents got called to the principals office! Thank goodness my Dad stood up for me! My Mother was all aghast because, I wrote about mistresses and infidelity!

Most of what you said about crinolines isnt true. First off, women at the time wore a chamise, pantalettes, and stockings to cover up all body parts. In addition, women generally wore a modesty petticoat under the cage crinoline. The corset contrary to what most people say was comfortable. It was used as a bust support, and to carry the weight of the crinoline, petticoats that went over the crinoline, and skirt. Crinolines were easy to sit in as well as easy to walk through openings like doors and gates. The amount of women that died from a crinoline fire was heavily exaggerated here. Most people only see complete satire of fashion trends from the Victorian era and always assume the worse. The cage crinoline became popular around 1856, were elliptical shaped in the back for half of the 1860s and went out of fashion around 1870 when the bustle became necessary for the new silhouette of that era. Crinolines did not come back during WWI due to the fact the material used for the crinoline was needed for the war. WWI era was much simpler with a small under bust style corset, and a petticoat to help support the popular skirt style of the time, not to mention the hem line was very slowly rising by the second half of the 1910s.

This is one of my favorite eras in fashion and I think it is a beautiful feminine look. Prior to crinolines women wore layers and layers of petticoats to create the fullness of the fashionable skirts of the time. They were extremely heavy and hot to wear. Crinolines were much lighter and it gives a feeling of floating. Eventually the shape changed to place the fullness to the back which ultimately became the bustles. Crinolines gained a huge popularity again for formal wear and bridal gowns in the 1950s and early 1960s. I found a blue organdy and white lace ruffled crinoline dress at a bridal shop for my prom date in 1982. Even today for most quinceaneras the girls wear huge crinolines for the party. To me it is a spectacular and extremely beautiful look for a special occasion.

I always thought women atop a horse side saddle, because of the crazy fashions of the day, was so dangerous. Had I been alive then I would have grabbed a pair of men's trousers, redesigned by me, to stride a horse properly. Of course it would have made me the scandal of the town. Also ridiculous were the size of the hats! If we look at antique carriages, they were small
A women's dress and hat could fill half a bus today. I would have revolted! Poor women wore long dresses in that era that caught on fire while they were cooking right on top of the fireplace hearth.

Oh, so you're citing a book written by men, who had no idea what it's like to dress like a woman, and you're dismissing a testimony of a woman who actually wore the dress with crinoline.
Isn't that because you think men always know best what's good for women?
Also, you have been misinformed about the difference between natural and synthetic fabrics.

Corsets were not harmful. People had worn them in one form or another, for four hundred years. The most ridiculous fashion trend is the extreme thinness demanded by the fashion industry. I can guarantee more women have died from anorexia and bulimia than ever died from wearing a corset or a crinoline to achieve the fashionable silhouette.

If the boning was also collapsible it would mean a lot for women to be close, lolita fashion is one of the things i love to and wanting to buy but the Brazilian maker me likes tea made a prowess out of fabric it would be like it and conceal the show with the gazes if something fell. but i think a costom for boning would be good.

There are many crazy clothing fads now, but the one (which seems to be going out of style) is/was the pants falling off young men's behinds, showing underwear, mostly. Belts really did not fit into the fashion craze, so these men have to hike them up constantly. And, leads to an unusual and silly walk.

You are totally incorrect about the ''heavy and harmful'' corsets of the 1800s. Corsets were tailored to the individual woman, and were specifically designed to support her frame; not impede it. Anyone who wants to fight me on this, just doesn't know their history. I am right. You are wrong.

Had an old biddy tell me one day she could see the backs of my knees when I was putting my groceries from the trolley onto the counter, I replied at least I have knees and I was sorry I left my bushel at home. I was convinced she was an old head mistress breathing down my neck.

Full Stop. Corsets are not dangerous or harmful. They should and would have been fitted custom. They are NOT supposed to be worn tight, that was a fad like the thigh master. If they fit, they are structured and great for your back and health!

I love wearing modern crinoline and corset. I'm wearing it now. Today they do condense in small doorways. One has to know how to work them to sit in bathroom and in cars. I wear mine enough they I do all life things. You know.

I've worn a couple of these back in the 70s and 80s made out of metal. (Pageants, modeling and at one middle school dance. The novelty wore off the longer I wore them. I care not to wear one again - awkward and uncomfortable.

I love that it didn't matter that hundreds of people burned to death, or otherwise were hurt because of the ridiculous dresses. Yet the fashion stuck around for ages. Pretty much sums up humanity IMO

The makeup that makes your nose look shiny, sometimes they put it on their cheekbones too, but mostly the tip of their nose! I know it's not clothing, but it is in fashion, at least for the last 3 years!

Bending forward and exposing the legs is scandalous, because they didn't wear closed underwear. Drawers had an open split in the middle.
That's also why Cancan dancing was so juicy

I believed these skirts were worn to create a booty where none existed. Like the modern day comical booty enlargement. Ladies, please fake asses are mishspened and look unreal as heck.
