The story of the Bedford boys is a great story of American heroes. However, it was NOT the inspiration for Saving Private Ryan. SPR was based off of the Niland Brothers. There were 4 brothers serving and 3 of the 4 were thought to have been killed. The 4th, Fritz Niland, was sent back stateside to complete his military service. As it turned out, only 2 of the 4 has been KIA, and 1(Edward Niland) had been captured by the Japanese and was a POW. To be more accurate the idea for Saving Private Ryan came when Stephen Spielberg and Tom Hanks were reading the novel Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose. One small section (and I mean tiny in comparison to the rest of the book) mentioned the Niland Brothers, and thus inspired them to create the story for Saving Private Ryan. Not the Bedford boys.

I lived in Roanoke, VA for several years and drove to Richmond weekly. I would pass by the National D-Day memorial every time there on Highway 460. Beautiful memorial.
Not as many as with Bedford but my Grand Uncle (my Grandpas brother) was from Ennis, TX and him along with his 2 best friends from High School all joined the Marines in 1942 and shipped off to the Pacific. Also from Ennis was Jack Lummus who had left his career in the NFL with the New York Giants to join the Marines. All 4 found themselves on Iwo Jima in 1945 and all 4 were killed within days of one another. Lummus received the Medal of Honor for his actions on Iwo Jima.

not a movie but get this:
My great uncle, my dad's uncle, was in a french hospital at the end of WW2.
They were evacuating allied troops (in this case, Canadian) as they were ready to be moved, as they could, and so on. It went on for some time after the war because some dudes were in bad shape.
So when it came time for my uncle, who had a piece of shrapnel in his butt cheek until he died in his 80s, the nurse was like well, you're the last one.
and he was like what? the last one in the hospital?
and she was like Yes. And this is the last hospital. You're The Last One.

Our small Indiana town sent 5 men ashore on D-Day, four of whom I had the honor to meet. One was a captain who'd been local school teacher. After D-Day he led a squad behind enemy lines (I do not know why. He came home, returned to teaching, led a good life. If you met him some else would have to tell you what he did in those days, Tom Hank would be proud. No one will ever tell all the stories of WWII.

In the video you mentioned Clyde powers never knew what became of his brother jack. Im a descendant of theres and what the family has gathered is Jacks boat received a direct hit and most of not all on board perished. Also a small thing, when you talked about the Overstreet man you actually used a picture of another Bedford boy, frank draper. Just thought that should be cleared up

Thank God that when duty called these brave men stood up and answered that call. Growing up in Brooklyn NY my block was full of veterans, WWI, WWII, KOREA and VIETNAM. I respected every last one of them and always will. including my dad who fought in Korea with the 1st Marine division at Chosin Reservoir.
I only hope that duty calls again that this generation responds.

So many young men (and perhaps some women) lost their young lives here. They did not get the chance to enjoy their lives but did their duty to Country. I am a veteran of the USMC but was never in danger. These very brave and conscientious soldiers did this life and death action and it took a lot of guts. Proud of them but so very sad as to the great loss of life.

You should do a video on the Free State of Winston in Alabama during the Civil War (sometimes called the Republic of Winston. It was a small, rural area of what is modern Winston, Cullman, and Blount counties. They wished to secede from the state of Alabama as they wanted no part of their war with regards to the American Civil War. Interesting story

Dickie Overstreet was my gramothers brother & I've held the soap dish he was issued. He died in a tank attack. His tank was destroyed to the point they couldn't recognize one body from the next. They were buried across sea. Unless there's 2 Dickie Overstreets this isn't true. Tbh the picture looks like him. Wonder where they got the pic & name?

June 6th 1945, a military force combining of forces more than 10 nations including America, US, Belgium, our Aussie troops, Canada, France, Denmark, and New Zeland etc, landed in Normandy.
Self centered Americans with total disregard of actual history facts 0: 04 - On June 6th 1945, AMERICAN forces landed in.
Sure Americans sure!

Great movie but it was also very sad too. Kids these days are nothing compared to the brave boys on those ships who went to war and many didn't even make it off the boat. I served and went to war 2x but nothing like the brave men and women who served in the Wars of yester year.

As a Viginia native I can confirm this as a true story. The Bedford Boys have a monument in Bedford in their honor.
Between that and the pacifist soldier from Lynchburg are both true stories that Hollywood actually did very close to real life. True heroes all of them.

You should do a similar episode about WW1. Britain had a program where you could sign up with as many people as you wanted and stay together. There were whole villages and towns that lost their entire fighting age male population, the grimsby chums would be an example.

Taylor Fellers was my great uncle. Im lucky enough to have one of his dog tags. I drape it over the flag given to me after my fathers funeral, who died prematurely, from complications due to his two tours in Vietnam.

Meanwhile in 2021. people have meltdowns when they don't get enough likes on their post!
WWII is a good reminder of what real problems are, how tough those men and women were, and how lucky we are today in comparison.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Lest we forget! Lest we forget!

The political class starts wars for the lower class to fight. If anything we should thank them. We wouldn't have wars if they didn't work so hard to create them. The poors are overpopulated anyway.
