Thomas Edison Inventions He Didn't Actually Invent

Thomas Edison was one of the greatest inventors of all time - or was he Most people think Edison was the inventor of the light bulb, but that doesn't seem to be the case, which begs the question, Who truly invented the light bulb There is a lot of contention over famous stolen inventions, and unfortunately it's impossible to not bring up Edison when it comes to the subject.

Edison didn't do anything other people have been doing for centuries. DaVinci gets credit for all those ideas when he was often taking this other guy's ideas fleshing them out, making them better, or even work. He knew a lot wouldn't because of the lack of abilities and materials of the time. A lot of the Renaissance artists, like Michaelangelo, had apprentices working on paintings and sculptures that the main men got credit for.
Edison bought up patents that failed. The genius was that he saw the potential of some and was able to cobble the best ideas together, add to them, and TADA! Lightbulb! It's not always about being the only, or smartest, guy in the roo, it's often about utilizing the smartest people in the best way.

The Edison was a hack thing is a really tired meme at this point and shows a lack of understanding of how business and invention works. No. Edison did not singlehanded invent everything that you thought he did in second grade. What made Edison successful was his ability to take already created ideas and make them affordable/more efficient. Yeah. He didn’t invite the light bulb. But his company made it so that the light bulb was actually practical. I’m all for knocking him down a peg and giving proper credit to his employees. But it’s swung so far the other direction that people just as misinformed just in the opposite direction.

When I was in school in the 1950s and 60s, we of course were taught that Thomas Edison was a great hero. My father, born in 1925, was named Thomas after Thomas Edison, and my middle name became Thomas for the same reason. I have a complete set of the 1942 Encyclopedia Britannica, and in it, they gush like fanatics about how great he was. As a long time historian, I learned fairly early that what I'd been taught about him was oh so wrong. That led me to dive deeply into many historical facts to root out the truths. To me, Edison is near the top of the scum heap, but Christopher Columbus tops it.

You are a history revisionist. Just because Edison made the investments to make these inventions commercially practical, doesn’t disqualify his contributions to the technological world. Your video is a stretch. Muybridge made stills on glass slides that couldn’t be projected in rapid succession. Edison perfected the film camera and projector, which was stolen from him and was used in the film industry in Hollywood. I could go on but it falls on the deaf ears of the Tesla fanboys.

Early electrical technology went through a period when ignorant peasants still thought it was magic. Edison was one inventor out to demystify electricity with practical applications, first to offer transmogrifying devices to industry giants. If Nikola Tesla really did have a 'death-ray', Edison would have stolen it.
Today, We have DARPA watching out for wild new technologies before any maniacs can potentially use them. Now the 'death-ray' scenario is pretty much impossible.

One subject no mentioned in this video. I have come across a 78RPM record, not a shellac record. This record is actually a wooden plank with plastic/ maybe bakelite coating. This is different as the grooves are very thin like the modern vinyl records. The shellac records required large needles.
The label on this record is Edison. Apparently, since the grooves were so thin, only an Edison record player could be used to play these records.

Most of this isn't quite accurate and not as simple as it's shown here, HOWEVER, Edison is indeed a lousy person. Any inventor that worked for him had their work patented under HIS name. A direct opposite to a true genius and a man that respected people that worked under him, George Westinghouse. A man that stood diametrically opposed to Edison and how he did business and was a direct opponent to him in the war of the electric current.

I’m just gonna say it, because every other comment on videos with this narrator are mean-spirited. I like the new guy, and he doesn’t deserve the level of hate he’s getting. The older guy, admittedly, I don’t think anyone can top in terms of delivery, but it’s an unfair comparison since older guy has been doing this for years and years. Keep doing what you’re doing, new guy, I appreciate you!

Weird History, do a story about the Centennial Light
The world's longest-lasting light bulb is the Centennial Light located at 4550 East Avenue, Livermore, California. It is maintained by the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department. The fire department claims that the bulb is at least 121 years old (installed 1901) and has only been turned off a handful of times.

To be fair, my employer puts its trademark on the stuff that I create from nothing. Of course, they pay me for my time so I guess that's fair. What glory hound should be fact checked next I recommend Lee DeForest, grandfather of television.

The battery was actually invented way before both of those people. There was an ancient discovery of an enclosed cell with different natural acids and natural materials in which were similar in chemical properties to earlier batteries.

This take on Edison makes him akin to the Apple of inventorswhile he may not have been first to come up with something, he waited in the wings with his own perfection of others’ ideas to popularize the invention and make it his own.

As a kid there was a cartoon series about historic figures and Edison was an underdog taking hours upon weeks and years to finally got the light bulb. Its like trump claiming to be Christian, just using a title to look more important

thanks for calling out this fraud! Edison violently murdered innocent animals in public, stole inventions from other REAL inventors and HIS own EMPLOYEES, and didn't pay those who worked for him a terrible person NOT an inventor
reply

Edison was most definitely not an inventor. He was a self promoting businessman, and very good at it! The light bulb we all know today was done by Swan over 20 years before Edison blatantly copied it.
reply

Edison was, now, well known thief and scoundrel that only had most of his genuine inventions because of the people he employed. That was his one true talent, hiring true geniuses and exploiting them.
reply

The more I learn about Edison the more I realize he was a terrible person. He did everything he could to ruin Nichola Tesla because of jealousy. These acts depicted here just seal the deal
