Why would we choose to live on a space habitat? Join Richard and Peter in their discussion with Dr. Ronke Olabisi. She earned the first of her many degrees in mechanical engineering from MIT and a certificate from the Russian Moscow Aviation Institute in their Manned Mission to Mars student exchange program. She is currently a member of -100 Year Starship-, an initiative that seeks to replicate the rapid technological development stimulated by the moon landings by tackling human interstellar travel

Alright, guys, first off, fun vid. Thanks for putting this together, I really enjoyed it, especially hearing from Ronke, and I'm very interested in her project. But we gotta talk about some things that all 3 of you were way off about. #1, the -threat- is already imminent. Logic and reason tells us without a doubt that an extinction level event will happen, it's just a matter of how and when. Whether it's a virus, a weapon, an asteroid, climate change, or friggen mutated murder-Hornets, eventually it will happen. Could be 10 years from now, could be 10, 000. The point is, the threat is real and we need to be a multi-planet (or megastructure) species to prevent our extinction. Secondly, we're making this sooooo much more complicated than it needs to be. And sooooo much more expensive. There only needs to be one friggen machine built. That's it. Just one. That machine builds more like it, and those build more, that build other machines, that build. more of those, that then start working on their objective while building more machines to further the project with increasing efficiency at every new generation. These machines would mine the asteroids so no money would be required; no people in space doing construction; no factories on earth consistently building new parts and having to launch them in space. We can come up with new machines and then send their designs to the ones up there, yes. Then they will build them and more like them, and so on. No, these machines are not gonna go on mining the entire system indefinitely until all life is wiped out. They will have a job to do then stop when it's completed. Then we'll give them a new job to do. They will calculate how many machines are needed to complete that job and not build a single machine too many. Yes, this sounds like science fiction. which, as you pointed out, is simply our science future and is not as far fetched as it seems. So we don't focus on figuring out how to build these stations in space, we focus on how to build that one machine that will make it all possible. And the only expense is in THAT, not in the entire thing. That gets built for free. Hundreds and thousands of space cities, and cities on other worlds. ALL BUILT FOR FREE. All it requires to build them is the technology (the innovation) and the resources. That's it. (And time, obviously) Let's do this right, people.

I always hate when people ask why we would spend money to build and live off Earth instead of spending that same money to fix our inherent issues here on Earth. The first answer I would give is, we wouldn't spend that money to fix our inherent issues here on Earth. We would waste it on wars, military equipment, and individual enrichment. None of those things ever fixes anything. As the young lady said. Whatever we develop in space always improves life here on Earth, because the complexity of surviving off Earth results in things that make life easier and often better for life here on Earth.

Long before being a new home for humanity, space stations like that are the true lab in which we come on terms with space. They will be our first attempt to build a habitat, or replicate an earth like habitat. That will in turn make it easier to study and manage earth habitats and ecosystem. Soon after that, we will build such habitat to preserve and further develop earth like habitat off world, just as you'd do with a natural parl, a zoo, or a Noah ark. Finally we will settle in. But the journey to that end will be long. I doubt we or our own grandsons will be able to witness it.

TBH, I enjoy listening to discussions such as this. IMHO, I feel humanity is not as advanced as our technical prowess. I can see world scenarios such as ELYSIUM and ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL springing up as -privileged- people create breakaway worlds to separate themselves from everyone else. We can create all sorts of wonderful machines and technologies but we can't seem to treat each other with basic respect. Sounds pessimistic, sure, but look at how we treat each other right now. WHAT IF-- humanity got its sh-t together and learned how to work together?

On a very small scale, think about how much it costs to go camping away from home/civilisation. Unless you find your resources out in the place you're camping you have to bring it all with you. There needs to be enough room on your vehicle to carry all your resources you are ever going to use. Scarcity brings about some primitive responses in people. I can understand the effort in looking for Earth 2 and the expense that may be endured for such a quest, but we'll still bring greed and our desire to survive with us.

I 100% agree with her about the 100 year starship. It would produce massive technological spin-offs.
But the exact same thing applies to the other technologically challenging space endeavors that she criticized as impractical earlier in the video. For example, the technologies that would need to be created to sustain off-world habitats that a human could spend their entire life in would be groundbreaking and numerous.

I doesn't want to live in space I'm happy on earth I doesn't want to live my entire life in a dumb space Station or shuttle in earth there are rivers, lakes, rain forest and beautiful Hills covered by ice and forest and I love to travel in different countries and wants to explore it and my whish to see the night sky fully covered by star in open ocean

I seriously hate to refute the good doctors logic, but there is simply no way an entire O'Neil cylinder is going to be pre fabricated on earth and launched piece by piece to be assembled at Langrange points.
Facilities will need to be set up on the moon to fabricate the pieces from moon regolith and easily launched to the Langrange points.

You do not need a one-world government you just need a free market and people like Elon. The private sector out preforms government every time.
Why would you build a space station you will never live in?
Because of this thing called money. They pay you to work and you do things that you would otherwise not do.

what if all the billions of dollars used with all these mega structures will be used in projects in making used of natural sources of energy rather than petroleum? what if we live in an eco friendly environment for a year? what would the earth could be? would it be saved from global warming?

Elon Musk is a misogynistic prick, and a mass murderer.
Also, slaves didn't build the pyramids. The problem with this discussion format is that you haven't even done any goddamn research. This video is swiss cheese.

Whatif we send humanoid robot ( one which is in the movie -ghost in the shell - ) in space. I mean Cyborg human which only have human the brain in a machine rather than whole human body and send it to the outer space.

I mean your helping the future your making history and allowing your future generations to live on and grow. If we don't support the future we won't have a future.

i think space cylinder will cheese off people who think its only for people who are on the current space station like that woman who just talked

that vat of bacteria will need raw materials the point of mining the moon/asteroids is you don't have to bring stuff up from the gravity well
