The one problem I've had with the whole large impact, is the explosion wouldn't lose strength around the planet. If that was true the every tested nuke would have have been felt around the world.

What if they launched shuttles that could send it another way with engines, I know they said the gravity would do it, but what if it literally attached, and the jets from the engine made it turn away
