Generally I like bugs, and when I first moved to place that gets cicadas every year, I was delighted. I thought it was so cool seeing them and the shells they leave behind. The novelty of them quickly wore off, as they are extremely loud and it does NOT sound like a symphony, it's just horrible repetitive buzzing, for hours and hours, all day, day after day. There can be so many of them that you have to raise your voice to speak to someone you're right next to if you're outside, and you'll still hear them even if you close all the windows and hide in your house. They're clumsy flyers and may crash into you, their dead/dying bodies are everywhere and since they're so big they're particularly disgusting to accidentally step on. And their carcasses literally stink. They're interesting creatures, but it's no fun living with them.

Why can I imagine a whole musical about a cicadas life as I hear this genius speak? The longing for love, the imperative to procreate after 17 long years, the all for one dynamic. And of course they-re naturally musical creatures! It would be R&B / Motown style with an all minority cast, like Hamilton. The first act begins with the emergence and the theater fills with the swelling sound of their song, but it-s a human chorus version of it. The last act would show the main character finally reproducing and 17 years later, their child emerges and the cycle continues. This guy and other entomologists would be consultants on the script and set obviously. Am I the only one that can see this! Who would you guys want to see in the cast!

I know cicadas are the sound of summer in certain places, like Japan. Since cicadas are typically heard during the summer, it-s also one of my most-hated sounds as I loathe summer. I doubt I could ever move to Japan since spending even just one summer there would make me regret all my life choices that came to that particular moment.

Growing up along the Eastern coastline, cicadas we had always thought of this. Summer Song. as something that didn't really happen every year. Hearing them now, being deep in the midwest now, through various videos and news takes on this brood batch was both emotional and melodic for the inner child of us.

The cicada sounds always remember me of summer nights as a kid. Riding my bike til the street lights came on. Or maybe at the park with my friends. Even though I'm not a bug person I appreciate this man's passion and his ability to make learning enjoyable

I never grew up around these cicadas, just like how I never grew up around coqui frogs, and I absolutely love the sound of coqui frogs. Im Sure if I moved to an area with cicada, I would love the sound as well.

Until I was like 13 I thought the sounds they make were the -the sounds of the sizzling summer heat- until my friend found out and laughed at me, telling me that sound I've been hearing my whole life were CICADAS

I'm glad cicadas in my country aren't as dramatic as the ones in the States - They sound prominent in places that have many trees and after the rain. But they are not too noisy compared to the ones in the video.

I hate these things lol. They're everywhere in Japan, all over the floor, when people accidently step on them, they go off like a powerful vibrator under your foot, we call it semi bakudan.
