I thought about it when I was young, the best way to deflect a planet killer. Since space lacks a means to propagate a shockwave you basically just use concussive force to nudge it. Slam nukes into it one after another to add onto the push. I don't know the math on how many it would take but considering how rare these events are in our system we probably have an amount of nukes that's overkill for the job. The trick is detecting it early enough to intercept it so the push is effective. Universally speaking if caught early enough you wouldn't have to nudge it a whole lot to make it miss. And if you happen to be able to borrow another planet's gravitational field that's even better. Give it a little nudge, let the planet change the trajectory even more, and voila. Speculation on my part though. I'm by no means a genius in the field.

This is -anti-panic- propaganda designed to make the population have unearned faith in the status quos ability to deal with an asteroid which IT CAN NOT, AND IS NOWHERE NEAR BEING ABLE TO DO ANHTHING BUT KEEP SOCIETY BUSY UNTIL IT KILLS US ALL
I have a suspicion (with no proof of course, just a gut feeling) that there is already a medium level threat known to be coming our way already and the spike in collision related material in our modern media is a way to desensitize us for a generation before they tell us impact is imminent

Whether it-s a movie or not, can we all for the sake of the human race, choose to actually Look Up if something like this were to become an issue? I can-t even explain in words how frustrated this movie made me because of how true to real life it seems. If someone says a comet is headed towards Earth, we need to be all over that.

Throwing a hundred tons of white paint onto a space rock may deflect a city-smashing asteroid away, via solar reflection of the paint -- but you'd need a lot of observations, over a long period of time, to establish it's orbit. They don't get that timeframe in -Don't Look Up-.

It is just a movie. makes you wonder if something does have our name on it. it happened a few times before. to be honest i think people are going to nuke each other off of the planet. way before a outter space object gets us. sad i don't see any future for us

See. this is a very interesting video. But I feel like it's taking the message of the film a little too. literally? I always took the simple message of the film to be GLOBAL WARMING. Listen to the scientists telling us the world will end if we don't act.

Its ok we could send the space shuttle. nope. err a Saturn v. nope. or the orion moon rocket. eeerrr still waiting.
Even if we found out in 200 year we were going to get hit nasa would still be at the testing stage of orion.
