Americans travel abroad. It's highly likely that any emerging disease outbreak will end up in the U. S. because infected passengers on airlines will bring the disease with them. There are other international downsides, such as countries grappling with epidemics affect trades, but I'll leave that scenario to the economics experts to cover.
