The novel is set in the United States in the 1920s. Our main character, Jay Gatsby, is a wealthy man who throws parties at his magnificent mansion in Long Island. Gatsby attracts all attention with his splendid lifestyle and high social status. However, Gatsby's real story is full of sacrifices he made to win the heart of the woman he loves, Daisy Buchanan, who comes from a wealthy family.
The narrator of the novel, Nick Carraway, is Gatsby's neighbor and the storyteller. While helping Gatsby and Daisy to get back together, Nick reveals the things Gatsby has done to establish his real identity and wealth.
Gatsby tries every possible way to reunite with Daisy. However, since Daisy is married, Gatsby has to find a way to be with her again. Since he cannot become rich legally, Gatsby gets involved in illegal activities such as drug trafficking and other illegal activities to earn money. He believes that he will regain Daisy by doing so.
While telling the story of Gatsby, the novel also exposes the illusions and destruction of the American Dream. Gatsby has recreated himself as a man of great wealth and social respect, but none of these are real. Fitzgerald shows how widespread these illusions are in American society.
Other characters in the novel include Daisy Buchanan, Nick Carraway, Daisy's husband Tom Buchanan, Gatsby's business partner Meyer Wolfsheim, and Daisy's friend Jordan Baker. Each character offers a different perspective on the novel's themes.
In the end, Gatsby loses the woman he loves and dies tragically. Fitzgerald presents the reader with a novel that portrays the corruption underlying the wealth and powerful desires of America.
