Carving trees into planks was to say the least wasteful as well as excessively laborious. Perhaps Mr. Devoe had littke knoeledge of woodworking. The Vikings had mastered the art of splitting wood in such a way that they made planks by splitting the trees. It was a common way of working wood in primitive cultures. Even for the making of bows.

Mr Smith is an excellent reader. I
am indebted to him for many hours of enjoyment to this elderly
old American. I have enjoyed his readings of many great classics.
