I'm just gulping this. I read it many times from '77 when it came out. I'm from LA, know every location in this book, and had remembered, through 30 years since the last reading and an international move, many details exactly as they're written. This book has given a dimension to my life like no other. I've never taken for granted things like linoleum, metal cans, strong cloth, not to mention electricity. Thanks so much for making this story available, and with such an excellent reader.

Niven and Pournell were writing an alien invasion novel called Footfall. When they submitted the chapter about the aliens dropping an asteroid on Earth, their publisher asked them to stop writing Footfall and give them a novel about a major asteroid strike. That is why Footfall and Lucifers Hammer have many of the same characters.

This was considered the classic survival novel, along with Alas Babylon! If you know basic Chinese history, it's terrifyingly not farfetched! (China may see it (Famine) again like 1950s, CCP Xi being horrificly incompetent! )
