My favorite period romance is Wuthering Heights. The best Heathcliff by far is Tom Hardy. The chemistry between he and his Catherine, who later became his real wife, is so evident. It-s in their eyes and tortured verbal exchanges between one another. To be in love with someone to the extent that you feel you almost cannot take a breath without them and yet you defy your true heart and love because you choose a marriage partner based upon societal conventions and class. Love doesn-t follow these rules. It follows its own wild heart. This self denial people put themselves through. This marrying inside a group to placate the social norms and the expectations of others is the equivalent of falling on an emotional sword again and again. The heart knows no rules.

I swear if Pride and Prejudice wasn-t listed as #1 I wouldn-t have slept for days cuz I would be reading the book 3times and watching both the Keira version and the 1995 BBC version multiple times to make sure I was right. Pride and Prejudice is no doubt the novel that made me fall in love with not only Jane Austen but literature in general. Used to only read sparknotes until 9th grade? but Pride and Prejudice made me realize that its not just the plot but the actual, literal words that make you appreciate a work.

You left out the movie Silk. Keira was the leading actress in that movie. Prior to 2000, The Lovers (Butterfly Lovers) (1994) is the best period romance movie. Think of Chinese Romeo and Juliet. Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 movie of -Romeo and Juliet deserves to be in the top 5 pre-2000s movies. But the best non-period romance movie is the best romantic movie -Cinema Paradiso- (Director's Cut version. -Casablanca- was #2.

but the English series - of the same name-is simply amazing!

I would definitely add 'Becoming Jane' / 'Shakespeare in Love' / 'Dangerous Liaisons' / 'The Duchess' to the list,
though.
('Atonement' or 'The notebook' are not proper period movies to me, more contemporary ones, but if not, they would definitely be on top of the list for me.

I so very much wanted to enjoy Atonement, but it was easily an hour too short. It was building up to be such a great epic and then suddenly cuts to 40 years later (or something, skipping over what could have been a wonderful experience. It was just too jarring and takes you out of the sweeping epic feel.

Belle is an amazing persona that every woman out there seek to be, confident, kind and brilliant. Her witty tongue can slay any ghastly or inferior opinion towards her, her character is far superior to those even in the 21st century and that includes me.

I've only seen 3 of the 5: The Young Victoria, Atonement, and Jane Eyre (although not the version listed here. I will watch Belle if I can find it. I have never had any desire to watch Pride and Prejudice. And this list didn't change my mind.

Literally nothing can replace pride and predujice in the era of period romanes. Tried hard to get that vibe same as the pride and predujice but i didn't. If anyone can suggest me same as pride and predujice?

Are all these scenes from Pride and Prejudice on the video from the DVD version? I had the impression that I didn't see some extended scenes watching it, and I'm not talking about the kiss scene.

It was astonishing.
And Atonement.
Such excellence and very sad.
