In a sparse post-apocalyptic world a man's grief leads him on a path towards danger and disappointment. Where the Shadows Fall a film by Kate Phillips More About Where the Shadows Fall: The world is dead. Its only inhabitants are loners and wanderers, people whose purposes in life remain unfulfilled. They linger on in an empty and bleak world. Some embrace the anarchy, while others continue to seek resolution and meaning. The Man is one of these. His search is for his family, a wife and son he lost so long ago that he no longer remembers the circumstances of their disappearance. All he knows is that he must find them, no matter the cost. It is the sole reason for his survival. When he comes upon a weird carnival of wandering strangers, he stops looking only for a place to rest and continue on his way. But then the strangers put on a show for their new guest, and the Man sees someone very familiar Has he finally found what he seeks Or is he so accustomed to self-deception that he can no longer recognize the face of the woman he once loved Connect with Kate Phillips: Website

I really liked this video. With all the pains the creators of this video took to make it believable, I was shoocked by the car drawn by 2 horses. Not that that was so unbelievable. Without the engine and transmission, I don't think that would be a problem. But, it was evident the prop master new nothing about horses. The first shock was there was no draw bar. The only way the horses were hitched was with the reins. The only connection to the car was the reins in the drivers hands. It was pretty evident the car was just idling along behind the horses. The actual harness was all wrong, too. There were no collars on the horses to bear the weight of the car. Instead, the horses were wearing thin, leather martingales. Martingales are saddle tack. The reins run through a rig attached to martingale, or a strap is attached to the bridle to keep the horse from tossing his head. As I said, with the excellent detail in the rest of the short, this lack of atention, really surprised me.

The killing of the two clowns ruined the movie for me. If the world is that dangerous, such a company would disarm potential customers first. And they would be armed too: only chance to survive. And no, the hooker is not her wife (different hair color) nor the child his (that's not my son. Postapocalyptic serves usually as excuse to call something sci-fi, which is not nice but ok for me (Canticle for Leibowitz, for example, is universally considered sci-fi and has just the slightest hint of advanced science.

Oh I know this one. The dark clowns are lawyers and his wife took him to task and even took his car and the good horse. Turned his kid against him and both were happy when he was bashed and bleeding on a rock in the desert. The stuff nailed to the tree was his other clothes torn up and cut to ribbons. Even the worthless horse walked away in the end.
Now he has to walk around in a fake beard to keep from getting busted on his AVO. Oh wait! That's my story. Dunno about this poor bastard.

I thought I recognized the song, the Carmen Goett version is fantastic. I appreciate the explanation after watching the video. I thought I had a grasp, but the text filled in the details just enough. There's so much character here for such a short film. Dude needs to stow the trigger finger though and be a little more careful walking into a camp of strangers. All the best & blessings be.

It is all sad. A man searching for his lost wife and son in a post-apocalyptic world. So many questions: What happened Disease Nuclear war Global natural disaster Is his wife and son still alive Has his grief driven him insane My favorite part though is the song La Llarona, the ballad of the weeping woman, one f the best Mexican folk songs I know.
reply

this my thoughts on it. some kind of apocalyptic event happened, his wife and child died. hes a little insane. the people he found the woman was a hooker and he in his mind thought it was her. and i dont think this is the first time hes done it. its about mourning and longing. hes not dead or in hell, thats obvious. he's in hell in his own mind.

I really liked this movie You tube is the only thing that keeps me from flushing this iPhone down the toilet. I am too old to learn passwords and pass codes and user IDs. May the Lord help this poor old Auntgranny or just put me out of my misery

Not all questions need to be answered. A fraught situation rife with deep but vague symbolism is arresting. The missing The carnival or ceremony And, of course, the tree. We all experience desperation at some point- it's universal. Nice job!
reply

I don’t get it. I mean, I understand that his wife and son are dead and he is grieving. What am I missing Did anyone out there get more meaning or understand it better than me I’d love some clarification.
reply

I did give it a thumbs up. It was well done, well acted, well directed. Kudos. Now. Any explanation of the symbolism of the tree, its 'decorations', etc, and what brought him, and the world, to its current condition
reply

I really enjoyed it. I would like to see more of the world he is living in and what brought him to his current situation. And of course the deep meaning behind the tree. I would watch this on t. v! - Ken Brown

I believe the car being pulled is a 1954 MGTD, worth about 10 grand (as it is) in the U. S. Don't know how much it's worth in Australia, but apparently not nearly as much as it's worth here.

Why do these shorts have to be so damn boring I gave up at 4: 30 -- ffs -- it's a goddam SHORT -- you've only got 13 minutes, so why do you wast so much time!

has everyone noticed how in the various post apocalyptic worlds the cosmetologists and hair dressers seem to be have survived, even if always offscreen
reply

Other than really poor acting the beard of the leading man has got to be the worse example of beard makeup I have had the misfortune to see.
reply

I think he is in some kind of private hell the tree reminds him of his family and the flowers are the most torturous thing of all and that is hope
reply

Not sci-fi but i loved every second of this short. The voice-over, the way it was cut together, the party scene and the visuals. Love, love, love
reply

It would've been nice if the poor guy carried an air cannister attached to a captive bolt gun, like that movie, No Country for Old Men.
reply

I am not liking his beard. I am very visual person, and his beard just takes away my visual enjoyment. I have to pass with this one.
reply

Love the way the bag on his right shoulder and the small stain on his hat switch to the other side (mirrored) at 3: 07. Oops.
reply

3: 27 Seems unlikely that other guy would have survived that long being such a bad shot but still trying to shot people on sight.
