Sci-fi short comments by Jan
Beware of spoilers!
Sally Ride by Christoffer Borggren
This comment will be so special, that I break usual structure here with Disclaimer: I will be hard in this one, but with good intent. This is a graduation movie and I think that even a hard critique can be constructive and better in graduation than later in career. I also find many of the problems in other movies too - so this one s not extraordinarily bad. I just find this movie good to be used as an example. I also have to state, that I think that it does not matter if a movie is just a part of something bigger: it should still be able to tell a coherent story in itself. I also do not believe in descriptions - the movie should contain all necessary information. And in this case, I still think that the movie does not correspond well to the description. I did not read any description before watching the movie. Therefore (plus help of not reading carefully the information at the beginning of the movie, I missed completely the idea, that this was not Earth. Yes, my mistake. Nevertheless, I leave my comments as I still do not know that as many of the criticism is still valid regardless of such knowledge / ignorance.
Plot: The story is about colony trying to get into contact with Earth. But the plot and storytelling are very confusing, full of logical problems and holes. Biggest problem is insufficient exposition: we do not have enough information about the backstory. Just a line of text at the beginning is not enough. I get that the budget maybe did not enable the non-Earth setting, but there were no clear visual clues that this was not Earth. The argument between those two was a problem: the sentences were very cryptic, they were talking again and again about something, but it was very hard to find out about what. If this was a try to build tension and expectation, it failed. The tension should rise from our expectation IF the things gonna go the way we want them to go. It should not rise from our ignorance of what is happening, what happened and what will happen. And no, we maybe did not see alien in Alien (it was ignorance about its appearance, but we still knew pretty well that it is there and it wants to eat us. The argument was also a problem from another reason: it was meant to be big and important, but we did not feel it that way. Because of no background and exposition of those two people. Who they are, what is their relationship, why they are so angry, why it is so important Why should it be bad that she would return to Earth Was it a question of some pride And these problems are still there even if we know pretty well that it is non-earth colony. Why they are so upset with the situation, did not they expect it to be dangers to go to colony This is extremely common in these sci-fi shorts astronauts are surprised that it is dangerous in space and react unadequately The scenes after the argument I would rather use that time for storytelling, background info and exposition - no need for scenes with people staring somewhere (I know, I write it always, but I really hate these scenes, and they are almost everywhere such a plague. There is also another big problem with characters: what was purpose of character named Lucy OK, she was an astronaut, she went to orbit and then what She confirmed she see something, and then what She did nothing there, so why she had to go there Maybe the communication needed a spacecraft on orbit but they could say it somewhere and it still could be automated Lucy had no real purpose in the story. Why to go up Then why to argue about it The plot also has no clear ending. It is not a problem per se, there are many movies with good open endings. But here, the problems are even here with internal logic. OK, so there is a storytelling, but with insufficient info mainly in exposition. We have insufficient background for the whole story and also for the main characters, which 1) brings confusion, 2) we do not feel emotions where we should feel them (in the argument. The plot is not coherent as there are also many logical problems and problems with characters
Negatives: 1) plot; 2) internal logic: why it is NASA and with American flag, if it is non-earth colony It brings confusion; 3) internal logic: why they had to send spacecraft to communicate no info on that; 4) internal logic: when mother denied communication shouldn’t they ask WHY 5) internal logic: she started from colony to orbit, then few minutes left, no info about longer time left, anything and BAM, she lands on Earth So, what is that colony Could it be just some another part of Earth Or Moon Or what 6) detail: what was M88 we can guess, but we really do not know; 7) detail: why call it mother and not just Earth Especially, when there is a tradition of sci-fi that such nicknames are given to computers I thought whole movie that mother is just some system on some space station. Yes, you have right to call mother whatever you want, but it can bring confusion; 8) detail: CGI: if you could visualise the spacecraft on orbit or going through atmosphere, why not visualise M88 (I still do not know what it is) Or two suns on the sky of a colony; 9) detail: I know you probably did not have great budget, but why couldn’t that NASA lade have her own computer, table and microphone
Positives: 1) the general idea of earth alienating its own colony is great; 2) staring scenes had no flashbacks that is definitely positive
Personal note: Earth vs colony alienation do somebody smell Babylon 5
Summary: Not a good movie. Good idea, but everything else needs revision. And my biggest comment so far.

Like many, I came across this short in my feed after watching a few other DUST movies.
The film is well shot, the actors do a good job with their characters.
However, like a lot the plot is confusing. With a short you've very little time to establish the characters and the plot and get something across. Show, don't tell, has an enormous point in this form. And I'm afraid it failed a bit on that.
Any art form that requires some other media (in this case your description) to explain the plot, means the plot is failing to do it's job. I'm not sure if this is one of a series, as there does appear to be something before this, if so your only failing is to not include something as simple as Part 2 in the title. If not you need to better think the plot.
1) There appears to be two planets, given the spaceship. But who was the colony, how far the colony was apart from Earth didn't seem to be explained, and this is a great part of the plot. However, by the end I was wondering if the colony was on the same planet and the spaceship is just a quick method of travel
2) The mother term was a bit of a trope, but again the radio context didn't make it clear which end was mother. Why were they talking, how where they talking was the spaceship relaying the call, why were they sending that up if the context was still to make radio contact
3) The spacecraft going up seemed all wrong, they launch, someone isn't allowed to approach something, the pilot (who I thought was the titular Sally Ride, but apparently she's called Lucy, then it deorbits. It was all too confusing. Also as a bit of space nerd, you cannot just instantly abort otherwise you are not going to land where you started, you need to wait until you are on the opposite side of the planet to begin your deorbit, but that is a space nerdy bit.

OK. As a Sci Fi reader and watcher for over 50 years, I have to be a little negative here. If it were not for the overview in the description stuff of this film (which I read after, hence this comment, I wouldn't have a clue what's going on. Without those notes I would be clueless as to who was going where and what the objective was. Beautifully filmed and acted, but what was the objetcive and by whom I will look forward to more, but please take the POV of someone who doesn't know or understand the back story. As with a lot of these excellent short movies the creator(s) have spent so long making it that they understand and feel the story's history and therefore get enveloped by it, missing the fact that most of the people who end up watching it have no clue. Great stuff guys, but try thinking about your story from a viewers point of view. Will they actually understand it Will they engage with it In this case I would say no, although I enjoyed the acting and the filming/effects. Great characters, great actors, story unfortunately lost. I understand that the creator of this film is trying to plot much in a short timeframe, but something got lost here until you read the descriptive notes. Not everyone will do that. Liked anyway, look forward to seeing more.

Didn't like it. The dialogue between Lucy and (The man) was clunky, the dynamic of their relationship was forced and not believable. Having to read the description in order to fill in the blanks of the story would have been nice to know ahead of time as I never read them first, if at all. And the whole second half of the description is not even implied in the slightest in the film. The saving of family and friends, Lucy being portrayed as mentally ill, having a lot to prove and many people to convince. Having to prove what exactly Convince who And convince them of what It just seems like the director took what they thought was an easier path and instead of filming another 3-4 minutes of story they just wrote it down in the description instead which was weak, at best. The science is a mess, it was poorly acted, but that's likely due to the script not the actors talent. It should never be necessary to explain everything to the audience and by allowing them to discover what is going on rather than needing to tell them is a sign of strong storytelling, but this was so devoid of information that it was necessary to put it in a prologue and even then almost none of that was conveyed in the film. Definitely needs some work.

How did she make it from Terra 2 to Earth. The closest possible system is 4 lightyears away. She departs on a chemical rocket Also they seem to have instantaneous communication with earth with what is coded as a radio. That would mean that Terra 2 is less than 1 light second away which is closer than the moon.
None of this makes sense. The acting was far superior to most Dust shorts and the cinematography was beautiful.
Unfortunately there's still the word science in science-fiction. Your movie showed us chemical rockets and radios. It also showed us that Terra 2 is a planet with an atmosphere and plant life. The text says colonisation not terraforming so it can't be a moon colony. Even if it were the gravity is all wrong.

Yes send the fragile woman off to do some space mission and the janitor guy who's more fit in every way fill in the emotional 'omg you are leaving' role, brilliant. Honestly with all the fakeness seen in these films it makes me start to feel reality is altered in some way, like as if in real life it would actually not be the opposite somehow. Even the fact they 'needed to contact' and then 'when in contact' they just sat there crying, then send a spacecraft to be obliterated, such a female concept honestly. How is everything Fine. . Are you sure Fine. We need more information Fine. We are literally going to blow up the spaceship that is approaching starts sniffling insteadof contacting back or doing anything Hello

Lots of unanswered questions. (Which dust is known for. In this world 2 planets are really close Both are Earth like with colony planet slightly cooler Or was outside screens We’re they always inside, but made to look outside. (So it could be earths moon Everything designed to make then think they were on a planet like earth)
9 days no contact Then told stay away or be fired upon Why no questions How long can colony go on without support As other suggested. Who is mother trying to protect
But to abort instantly. No questions, offers. I would love to see parts 2-10.

reply

too many flaws to be enjoyable. No contact with mother, then there is, then there isn't. (I think) Later, the approach will be nuterized becomes denied permission (which isn't exactly the same result/importance) and not replying/turning off the radio is just dumb. And she makes it through, which doesn't convey an effective protective action by earth. In the text, communications was stopped on purpose before we join the movie, but by whom & why. I don't mean to squish efforts for another, but I was not elated by this one. Edit--now that I read the other comments, seems I am not alone.
reply

Even for a short, that was incomplete to the point of breaking my industrial strength disbelief suspenders. If they have FTL comms, why do they need a courier How did Lucy go from liftoff on Terra 2 into Earth orbit instantaneously What are they missing on a wet, forested planet with breathable atmosphere and enough infrastructure to pull off an interstellar rocket launch to make them so desperate to reconnect to Mother Earth
The cinematography was great, but the script was either written in ten minutes or half left on the cutting room floor.

reply

Wait. Why does the description tell this huge long story that we really didn't get even 2% of it in this film Weird teaser BUT I'd absolutely watch the entire film if it gets made and uploaded. Liked this short but it was very confusing. I watched it twice and still didn't understand what was going on. Reading the description helped. I only found out about it from another comment.
The description and the short here are two totally different things imo. Still, I'll happily watch the entire film. I'm intrigued for sure.

I've often wondered about this with our plans for a colony on the Moon or even Mars. What if they get up and running and established, maybe even for a generation or two. Then something happens on earth, like a global epidemic, natural disaster or WWIII or maybe just a major economic collapse. Where maintaining a link to it's colonies just isn't a priority for Earth anymore or it's just too expensive or the support industries or advanced technology industries just collapse. Then those people would be on their own.
reply

Good cinematography and cast, however, the storyline has huge holes and it's not clear what's going on. I had no idea that Sally was from an off planet colony until I read the description. I had no idea she was headed to Earth and there were no scenes to deliver that information. Add a couple more minutes to the film by giving more information about what's going on and it could be terrific. I immediately liked the cast, and the look of the film was terrific.
reply

Ugh. I like a good story. But dang, is it really that hard to actually complete one that will lead into the next 'episode'. This has to be one of the most frustrating things about DUST shorts. You should have taken us to the WHY of everything. You didn't even give us that in their beginning argument much less the 'helmet in the grass' ending. 10 minute film that should have been at least 20 or longer.
reply

I hate to say this, but this short film made no sense. The acting and filming was fine, but you left too many unanswered questions and it ended in a very unsatisfying way. Those who made the film may know what's going on, but you need to make that apparent to your audience, but you didn't. Don't give up though, the film did have redeeming qualities.
reply

I'm only a nascent writer, but when I write a short story I f i n i s h it. I'm getting tired of seeing posters on Dust say they are so eager for an ending or a serial or a fully realized idea. If you're short on film resources then just damn well condense the concept, but jeez. give me a lesson or a moral and a c o n c l u s i o n!
reply

ummmmmm. What I'm lost. Nice cinematography, but without a story to hang that on, we are left empty. The elements of story, such as the ups and downs of protagonist/antagonist are not cliches to be avoided; rather the elements of story are what connect our own experience of human with the fim - any film. No story = no connection.
reply

Well done, we'll done. It doesn't have to have an ending, just give us a glimpse of possibilities. of how we humans could react in these situations. Watching this short and It's like a having a small glimpse, thru a 11 minute window, into the happenings of an alternate universe.
Thank u for titillating my imagination

reply

I guess that's Chapter 1 or something. not enough there really to go one, but some tantalizing buildup to what happens next. The science (or lack thereof - an orbital capsule undertaking an interstellar journey on a random whim) is somewhat distracting, but I would like to see more of this. Keep it up! Thanks.
reply

Hey all, I'm Chris! I wrote and directed this thing. Sally ride is our graduation film and I am happy to finally share a part of it here. You got questions Comments Leave them here!
And don’t forget to check out the full credits list in the description, this film would not be here if it wasn’t for them!

reply

When did this happen Sounds like the description has a second episode in it:
Lucy soon finds herself facing resistance from the initiators based on earth who try to portray Lucy as a mentally ill woman, she now has a lot to prove & many people to convince in a very short time.

reply

Unfortunately, even with a short audition piece like this, you do need to have a story! That's where it all starts, and ends. Very little of what you describe in your commentary and synopsis below is actually ascertainable from watching the movie itself.
reply

see this is why i dont bother with these dust shorts anymore, since when has it been considered ground breaking or gripping to leave your audience going whaaa thaaa, im so heartbroken with the direction of cinema nowdays. its shameful.
reply

I could be wrong but to me, she left earth in one decade and re-entered in another. Similar to another Dust called, The Jump(one female astronaut leaving her lover, only to return to hear of his death of old age)
reply

At the end it sounds like it's a cover up the news mentions a ufo is approaching earth and that it was simply only a meteorite seems as if the public doesn't know of this second world inhabiting other humans.
reply

Well done - the in medias res approach and hanging ending works fine. Good sci-fi doesn't require extensive back-stories or a definite resolution - if it gets imagination going it has done the job.
reply

The movie had excellent potential and I believed in every character. I was going to say it was one of the best I have seen. However, you left me hanging with no resolution. Finish the story.
reply

If going for a non-story cliffhanger was what you were going for, you nailed it.
You have something here so either expanding it or explaining it would help your audience.
Very suspenseful.

reply

Dust, you can't just shove a bunch of stuff that doesn't make sense together and call it a story. But you just did, and the result is crap. Your ego just got the better of you.
reply

I'm getting tired of obscure endings that leave you with more questions than answers, but I'm sure these new film makers think they are soo brilliant and original.
reply

Hmm, a lot of half formed ideas, but not executed that well to my eyes. The premis could form the basis for a longer, fully fleshed out story though, I feel.
reply

Thank you very much for this, keep us wanting more. Hat's off for the camera work, sound, lights, grips, and the actors too. Oh and the writer(s. nice story.
reply

They couldn't build a ground based radio dish or launch a satellite
How is approaching Earth even remotely possible for a tiny pod orbiting an exoplanet

reply

This short movie is kinda confusing. Without a proper introduction and a skipped scene of traveling to Earth it looks like Lucy haven't left the planet.
reply

Well I enjoyed it all I was hoping for a tad more to give it context I can see where it’s was heading but alas it ended thought provoking mind you
reply

Sad people who want to go back to Earth and no explanation for why Earth doesn't want them back. Serious waste of my time. At least give me SOMETHING
