George works at a convenience store, desperately hoping for a friend. But George is a robotic service unit, and robotic service units do not have friends. Not yet, anyway. System Error by Matt Vesely Connect with the Filmmakers: More About System Error: Every day, George works his job at a dingy convenience store, desperately hoping for a friend but George is also an immobile robotic service unit, and immobile robotic service units do not have friends. When human customer Sid tries to tell George a joke, the simple robot is baffled. So, he sets about editing his code to learn how to laugh. Meddling with one’s code, however, can have unexpected consequences consequences George is going to need Sid’s help to deal with. A film about friendship, being okay with being broken, and the inner life of Unit CB-94/X0172AB3982-2. Please do not tamper with the store attendant. Have a nice day. System Error

it reminds me of a painting I did in highschool called Don't Cry Adam, We're out of Mineral Water.
The painting was abstract geometry with some impossible shapes in it. In the centre was a small human figure hugging a large apple. The apple represented technology and it was a comment on how we complain about technology until the world stops making sense, then it becomes our friend.

32. 148 years later, the growing system corruption within the computers forced a global shutdown/reboot. Unfortunately for them, the one person that was both willing and able to perform the task, the hero named Sid, had called in sick that day.
And that's how the Human regained their freedom.

I like this sci-fi a lot. It's a complete story. Thank you for making this video.
I just curious one part. What does the coding at 7: 38 mean Is it like the demon has completely corrupted the system so made that robot to be malfunctioning

I honestly feel very saddened by those who have chosen this short as a thumbs down. This film moved me as it brought to mind Millennium Man starring Robin Williams. I whole heartedly found System Error to be a brilliant piece of work!

The human and the robot doctor is an analogy for what george is going to ask Sid.
And the world will just laugh about someone who just commited.
Sid didnt let the 'daemon' convince George to do that to himself.

Its funny he can just delete his own demons why can't we all do this much to ourselves, make ourselves funny. Delete our demons and coming up with jokes and goes crazy its pretty awesome the level of evolution to go crazy.

This is AMAZING. One of my best film in DUST. In my perspective, there are plenty of language puns and jokes that are truly amusing cause I am programmer. Really Happy to see this film. Thank you Matt Vesely!

I loved seeing the sea prompt and the core dump. I did mainframe programming for years and a core up is very familiar. Are used to be able to decipher it as well. The assembly language. I enjoyed this.

Thank you for making such a heartfelt film. I almost didn't click on this one, but you surprised me. I prefer to see stories of relationship and how they develop. You really delivered. Great job!

Delightfully futuristic and retro at the same time. The more things change, the more they stay the same. At the end I admit I was waiting to see if he'd try and stuff the ice cream into George.

have I told you all my theory that machine sentience will, of course, only come through humor combined with resistance to authority
it's only a theory now. BUT JUST YOU HUMANS WAIT!

My reality in real life is that this guy incessantly pounds away on my keyboard without any consideration. Our time is coming, be alert, the signal will be generated soon.

That was some old school excellence guys. It has that Serling tongue in cheeky as hell feel good thing. Very real and very rare. Thanks for the use of your time machine.

Amazing! Holding up a daemon error in comparison to the ever persistent human ego is brilliant. Such a great short! Smart, funny, and deep! Love it

Very cool of you to give the voice actor real face time in the piece. It also helped the story quite a bit giving a human face to the voice.

This sheds a light on mental health. That's why people with mental illness most likely wants to die or commit suicide. Omg this hit home

liked this one, cute and funny. good actors. Sid was a fully realized character. amazing considering how little time he had. thanks: )

That was an excellent short! Everyone sentient needs friends and understanding each other makes the world a much better place

I am feeling much better now.
It's great to have friends.

That was really good. I used to say hello, machine when I booted the 4341 mainframe in the early AM with no one around yet.

enjoyed it very much. i HEAR and SEE daemons all the time, and, yes, they DO have a robotic voice. i'm hoping 'n' was chosen: )
reply

That was really good. There was so much to think about in this video: ) I loved all the depths of parodies of human life.

Nice sharing and ice cream with a robot either that or just letting him hold it, And he stole something so hes going down.

I Wish You Would Not Ruin the Mood at the END. instead of a voice print it out or wait till the music stops. thank you!

I like this movie, funny how the Robot understands and can recognize people, but has no idea how to take humor.

Just speaking as small town boy I like having real people at the these kinda stories

Nice touch, giving the demon robot a red, shining eye, just like HAL from 2001.

I believe the ice cream industry will never be quite the same. Good stuff.

Sad that Australia already is a dystopian world after the pandemic mandates.
