It feels like every game these days throw around the terms open world and sandbox. But really, what's the difference? Quite a bit, actually Festadds: so sand box only applies by which is more interactive with the envionment to story book follow my leader. personal empyreon galactic is open world open space sand box base building cessel building tek discovering A.I pve and pvp with A.I all rolled into 1. so how do you define sandbox and open world free to so as you want without being lead by questline stories? with the added option of opening a pda and activating a story book questline depending on the active mod. so games like this has now forced developers to do the same or get left behind. it is one thing to create a third person or first person semmi sandbox game or semi sand box open world game but it another to be out done by full open worlds full open space while being able to mine dig the landscape while also added an economy based trade system that is either flurreshing or failing depending on the worlds you visit or invade. while defending against pvp and A.I factions. think we need a new name for this new breed oof fully open and sand box games with role play included elements that also have a fully working NPC maket. maybe out of the sand box and onto the beach. beach games open world sand box becomes a beach. well to be fare not sure the open world sandbox references to games like survival genre games such as emp that have these fully interactive immersive none story lead envoronments with full element hazzards such as weather oxygen food water burning heat valcanic hazzards creature feature as well as faction aliens deliberatly trying to ruin your day by invading like pvp players. man yet has become so geek orientated you are starting to need the help of skunk works jple and nasa to build a hoover craft small transport or fighter vesel and capitol vessels. never mind size to weight ratio's and other physics being enteed in that have gone beyond my mind capable undestanding forcing me to lern shit my head would normally explode on. even got annoyed and had to give it a bad review. even though i like the damn game. just because i never learned geek. we need a word to sum up these new games like emp because they deserve a catagory of their own as long as they maintain the already noted elements that make emp. to think ark was the leader of complicated open world not sand box game that also listed a ton of elements that other open world games had never done before.
ok survival does not cut it as that only applies in the first few levels of the game. after your establish it become self sufficient and mostly headed into automation systems doiung the survival work for you. you kinda forget how long and vast the advancments of sandbox/open world has gone in just one game alone. this is the way forward with gaming. these games actually create such an immersive feel after several hours of constant game play you can actual feel yourself adjusting to the server day night time. once i thought i had played two days strait until i realised i just played 6 hours. dark room no referance to night day real world can at time mess with your concept of time. shame not to many play the game now. but this one game throws that line out beyond sandnox and open world. to the point i would say it is heading for a real world environment simulation with a what if this was possible.

my opinion, open world and sandbox are two separate classes, for one game, like how one would describe an Action/Adventure movie
Open World is the first class, it just describes the setting of the game, another example would be Dungeon Crawler
Sandbox is the second, describing how the game plays, a few other examples, Story-Teller, RPG, Shooter
games can have multiple second classes, such as Fallout 4 which would be an open world, RPG with shooting and sandbox mechanics
Horizon Zero Dawn is an Open World Story telling game, you get the story, but can't have any real impact on the story, Skyrim is an Open World RPG, where you can have a major impact of the outcome, Minecraft and Terraria are both Open World Sandbox games, they give you an open world, to do stuff in, they're used interchangeably because they're meant to be

My personal definition of the term -sandbox- came from two games that would definetly be termedas such (and perhaps not even as open-world) - these games were Vampire the Masquerade and Gothic II, and the element that started my personal request for game to be (in my eyes) branded as sandbox was -haven-. Whether it was some apartment that I was rewarded with or a (former) bandit lair that I claimed in fight, such personal -realm- was in my eyes one of the ultimate achievements. Of course, in these two, it was just very basic - i just took my souvenirs from adventures into this base and put them into some chest. Next step of course were games like Oblivion or Fallout 3, that incorporated -player-housing- intentionally. And after that, it was just a few steps more for me to do to reach dedicated sandbox games

MY DEFINITION.
Sandbox = A World Where The Player Has Freedom To Create, Destroy, Shape, Form & Manipulate The World As They Desire.
Open World = A World Where One Can Manipulate Placed Objects Like Buildings, Vehicles & Other Props But Cannot Reshape The World Itself Which Means Cities & Landscapes Cannot Be Replaced Or Reformed.
EXAMPLES.
Minecraft = Sandbox With Open World Elements.
Sim City = Sandbox With No Open World Elements.
GTA = Open World With No Sandbox Elements.
Fortnite = Open World With Sandbox Elements.

Can someone answer me a question i have had forever? When a certain part of an open world is not rendered, what happens to the NPC-s -daily- routines? For instance in skyrim, when i-m in the one side of the map, does the PC/console simulate and calculate the actions of NPCs in the opposite side of the map in such a way that they are always -living-? What about the animals, do they just randomly spawn wherever i-m in or are they constantly being -calculated- on the background?

In summary:
Sandbox games
-allow you to manipulate the game world with the tools at your disposal. This means you do not only interact but create and destroy objects, creatures, items etc. instead of just interacting with them. Maybe even design your own models yourself
Open-world game
- has a game area that can be traversed (almost) freely in any direction, as opposed to a level-based or structured game world.

Open world is one large map made into different areas like mountains country cities & towns you can go through anytime but have linear missions where sandbox is multiple big maps in random areas and can approach any objective in anyway and play how you want without on rails hitman 2 and 3 and sniper ghost warrior contracts are sandbox that let you approach targets how you please.

What if they made a game where the world was a sandbox and the player was a toy person or whatever, it has a story and the world size is like an open world, but you can not really do anything to manipulate the world around you. It's NOT sandbox, but it is.

Open world: Takes place in a big world that was handcrafted. Everyone that plays the game will be in the same world.
Sandbox: You have the game, and you do whatever you want with it with no clear objective... like a sandbox.
