Sandbox vs. Open-world games: what's the difference?
video description
ok survival does not cut it as that only applies in the first few levels of the game. after your establish it become self sufficient and mostly headed into automation systems doiung the survival work for you. you kinda forget how long and vast the advancments of sandbox/open world has gone in just one game alone. this is the way forward with gaming. these games actually create such an immersive feel after several hours of constant game play you can actual feel yourself adjusting to the server day night time. once i thought i had played two days strait until i realised i just played 6 hours. dark room no referance to night day real world can at time mess with your concept of time. shame not to many play the game now. but this one game throws that line out beyond sandnox and open world. to the point i would say it is heading for a real world environment simulation with a what if this was possible.

my opinion, open world and sandbox are two separate classes, for one game, like how one would describe an Action/Adventure movie
Open World is the first class, it just describes the setting of the game, another example would be Dungeon Crawler
Sandbox is the second, describing how the game plays, a few other examples, Story-Teller, RPG, Shooter
games can have multiple second classes, such as Fallout 4 which would be an open world, RPG with shooting and sandbox mechanics
Horizon Zero Dawn is an Open World Story telling game, you get the story, but can't have any real impact on the story, Skyrim is an Open World RPG, where you can have a major impact of the outcome, Minecraft and Terraria are both Open World Sandbox games, they give you an open world, to do stuff in, they're used interchangeably because they're meant to be

My personal definition of the term -sandbox- came from two games that would definetly be termedas such (and perhaps not even as open-world) - these games were Vampire the Masquerade and Gothic II, and the element that started my personal request for game to be (in my eyes) branded as sandbox was -haven-. Whether it was some apartment that I was rewarded with or a (former) bandit lair that I claimed in fight, such personal -realm- was in my eyes one of the ultimate achievements. Of course, in these two, it was just very basic - i just took my souvenirs from adventures into this base and put them into some chest. Next step of course were games like Oblivion or Fallout 3, that incorporated -player-housing- intentionally. And after that, it was just a few steps more for me to do to reach dedicated sandbox games

Can someone answer me a question i have had forever? When a certain part of an open world is not rendered, what happens to the NPC-s -daily- routines? For instance in skyrim, when i-m in the one side of the map, does the PC/console simulate and calculate the actions of NPCs in the opposite side of the map in such a way that they are always -living-? What about the animals, do they just randomly spawn wherever i-m in or are they constantly being -calculated- on the background?

In summary:
Sandbox games
-allow you to manipulate the game world with the tools at your disposal. This means you do not only interact but create and destroy objects, creatures, items etc. instead of just interacting with them. Maybe even design your own models yourself
Open-world game
- has a game area that can be traversed (almost) freely in any direction, as opposed to a level-based or structured game world.

Open world is one large map made into different areas like mountains country cities & towns you can go through anytime but have linear missions where sandbox is multiple big maps in random areas and can approach any objective in anyway and play how you want without on rails hitman 2 and 3 and sniper ghost warrior contracts are sandbox that let you approach targets how you please.

What if they made a game where the world was a sandbox and the player was a toy person or whatever, it has a story and the world size is like an open world, but you can not really do anything to manipulate the world around you. It's NOT sandbox, but it is.

Open world: Takes place in a big world that was handcrafted. Everyone that plays the game will be in the same world.
Sandbox: You have the game, and you do whatever you want with it with no clear objective... like a sandbox.
