How do save files work in video games?

We've all saved our progress in video games for years...but have you ever wondered how it is saved in a file? fanjoy: I think it was 20 years ago when I used to program games into graphing calculator, I used to put security measures for save file. What I did was I had matrix value. I added the sum value into last section in the matrix. Then I divided the number in half and placed it in the beginning. I did place the size of matrix in the midpoint. So there were 3 point checks in my save file. If any of those number did not match, it would return an error saying save file is corrupted. I also had restore function for corrupted save file. It was imbedded in the last row of picture file as binary value. Yeah, I know it was unnecessary but it was fun as hell to program that into the game lol.

I remember old games where you had to write down a long code and when wanting to continue you had to type in that code. One particular game springs to mind: Maze Master on the C64 (The prequel to The Bard's Tale I Tales of the Unknown). I cheated on that game, by trial and error changing some values in the code and ending up with higher stats and the most powerful weapon in the game! :)
I also remember cheated in the original version of XCom on my Amiga 500 by loading the save game into a Hexeditor and searching for characters HP and XP values, converted to hexadecimal numbers, I saw before saving. Worked very well back then.

Ive taken a Borderlands 2 save from the 360 to the PC, then back to the 360 and uploaded it to the cloude and imported it to the Xbox One version. Yeah, lol all to get max money, good guns, and the Erideum (the purple rock currency) playback speed to 1.25 is better

No, never hacked a save file. I'm a slave to my console lol. ;P
I always get a weird sense of pride when I remember that Nintendo was the originator of the save file... though I'm a huge Sony girl. Don't know why.

I love it when you do videos like this Falcon. I've been playing video games for over 30 years, and not once have I really thought about how save games work. Very interesting. Thank you!

I remember one of the biggest game save files I ever encountered was in the original Deus Ex and each SINGLE file was approx 15MB which was a massive size in the early 2000's.

Jeez I can-t believe the Legend of Zelda came out in 1986, which was also the year that the Master of Puppets album came out, and also the year that Clif Burton died

A) Yes I-ve Hacked a save file. It was in the Commodore-64 days.
B) I-ve actually modified save files by copy/pasting more than Hacking. Especially Fable & The Sims.

Essentially it's a mini database all about your character.
Also, missed opportunity as you could have talked about how bloated Skyrims save files would get.

I forgot mega man 11 had manual saves so I beat a boss came back and my progress was lost so I just gave up on the game since I spent hours on that boss
