10 games that punish you for showing mercy
video description
In Call of Duty WWII's campaign, there will be moments where the Nazi soldiers will actually SURRENDER and the game actually suggests that you just take them in and capture them, instead of well. gun down a soldier, (even if it's a Nazi, who is surrendering. If you capture them, you don't get a bullet in the back for it. In fact I think the game sort of rewards you in some capacity for doing that. (Like an achievement maybe, it's been years.

I hate when games tout being able to choose the path heroism or villainy, only to always reward one and always punish the other. I don't feel like a hero if there is NEVER a tempting reward for choosing evil. Likewise, games that center on playing villains are boring if there are never options to choose good.
I prefer when rewards/punishments are not tied to good/evil options. Do you really feel like the selfless, altruistic hero if you always get rewarded for doing the right thing and punished for doing wrong? Evil options should be tempting because:
A) what is the temptation of evil if not selfishness?
and B) if you want to feel like the selfless good guy, what could feel more noble than doing the right thing at the expense of reward? or even making things harder on yourself?
I am not saying to always reward bad guy options and always punish good guy options, or even to always reward both equally - No, i think it works best if bad choices are tempting, but you might be punished or rewarded either way, often unexpectedly. You feel like a hero when you do the right thing even though you may be giving up something awesome. You MIGHT be plesantly suprised with a reward later, or not. But if you choose the bad option, you may be legitimately rewarded with what you wanted, or unexpectedly punished somehow.

I can't wait until all the AI survivors in survival games are equally as capable as players. Another layer would be if shooting someone is realistic, no health just bullet placement. Talk to the AI people and convince them to join you and your camp instead of fighting you. You can ask them to go on the roofs of buildings because you're planning an ambush. Zombies obviously. An awesome thing is if there is a way to cure the Zombies, turning them into either mindless lethal soldiers, regular folks again, or, my favorite possibility, regular humans that can't cope with what they did to others causing them to either go manic or constantly worried about themselves not knowing if you'll ever be fully in control. Now am I a genius or am I a genius.

Spoiler alert! Stop reading if you dont want spoilers for the quarry!
The quarry may be the worst at the end with Silas. If you spare him he instantly decapitates you and kills your friend too - all because you decide not to shoot him - dick. On conclusion I immediately restarted the chapter just to get my revenge, and shoot his ass dead. I was pissed lol

I think it was in Batman a level that thugs are full in fear they are harmless until you hit your goal, now you need to exit the building, but all of them become aggressive with weapons and they scare me, for the fun I had saved before I get in so i reload the save and beat them all after I get what I need the exit was walk in the park

This trope is actively bad - surrender is already hard irl without preconceived notions that surrenders are always fake. Whether it's in war or with the police.
Also come on the Mass Effect one isn't an example for so many reasons but the biggest is he was actually pointing a gun at you.

With The Last of Us Part 2 they could have EASILY made that game mechanic matter. Have Ellie show mercy throughout the game, and the ending makes sense. Have her ruthlessly murder everyone. get an ending where her rage, and hatred consumed her. Which have made the game way better better.

What, he's giving me his -energy- mercy and left me. maybe this is a sign. maybe I should change. maybe this is my second and last chance. maybe I was wrong. nah! -proceeds to attack you in the exact same way that got them to beg for mercy in the first place, with no change of tactics.

In 2011 skyrim the enemies were getting beaten, they run, cower and beg for mercy, especially the forsworn, I stopped the beating and of course they started attacking me again, that happened only one time, as I listen to the who hit, won't get fooled again

I really wish surrendering is an option in games
played some division 2 a few days ago, and this one chick witnessed how I more or less insta-killed 5 of her teammates alone and her only conclusion was to charge me and try to whack me with a baton

We have been showing jake too much mercy in not pressing him to fullfill his promise of pizza.
The result, no pizza.
We are merciful no more, for Jake will have to finally pay for his pizza!
VIVA LA PIZZALUTION!

In Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous I forget the name of the character but they betray you pretty early on and you can choose to let them go. Later I found them helping an evil guy who had a bunch of hostages

In Final Fantasy 6, showing mercy to Lone Wolf can get you a Gold Hairpin but screws you out of recruiting Mog. You should never show mercy to anyone holding cute cuddly creatures hostage in the first place!

I remember a few random encounters in red dead redemption 2 where if you decide to help the person they either try to steal your horse or try to rob you at gunpoint and in one of them the night folk ambush you.

Except you get the best armor in Elden Ring if you keep sparing Patches. And your punishments are getting sent to areas you would have ended up on your own anyways. There is literally no benefit to killing him.

I've fell victim to tactics ogre. I've spared them and in the end my favorite character whom I want to recruit died. I won't tell her name to avoid spoilers for those who haven't played this game yet

In Megaten, you can have good outcomes by being merciful, it depends if their are good or evil, your level and the moon phase. So it s more complicated than what Falcon says when it s arbitrary.

Maybe meta, but honestly I think Dishonored games punish you HARD for sparing people. You basically miss out on half of the most fun game mechanics if you try to go the merciful route.
