Immortals of Aveum - Before You Buy d1MnZz: When are we going to have the talk about burning millions of dollars to make aggressively mid games? I genuinely don't understand where much of the positivity - other than the coerced one from sponsored content, of course - is coming from, watching the footage along with the commentary here felt jarring.
Maybe it's me, I just can't find the energy anymore to look for the good in what are clearly bloated/overdone projects that don't advance gameplay in any meaningful way (especially in a genre like FPS where we've had many best game of all time contenders be it Solo, Coop, Multiplayer etc) in no universe would you rather pay premium to play Aveum instead of playing Doom, Metro, Borderlands etc again and again and again, I'm sorry, I don't get it, playing something new just for the sake of playing something new is so weird to me.

The game would have been 100% better if they got professional writers. This plague in the video game industry of sophomoric, uncreative, unbearably poor writing is really starting to drag the whole hobby down. Almost every AAA game has amateurish dialogue that is 10 years past its sell by date. The modern language & 90's style humor destroys the quality of the world & often makes the entire game tedious.
They dont need Shakespeare -- just someone with actual talent who is qualified for the job.
Immortals of Aveum goes from a 7. 5 to a 5. 5 because of the awful writing. It just makes every other flaw that much harder to look past.
I wouldnt buy this game full price. I think most people would regret it. Wait for a sale or do what i do.
Gamefly --- it saves me so much money in mediocre titles i want to play on launch but am glad i didnt buy. this is a perfect example of one.

Personally, I've come to a point where a linear story based FPS just isn't engaging enough for me anymore. There needs to be something special, something unique mechanics-wise, or, something addicting, like multiplayer. Call of Duty is too bland anymore. And Call of Duty, but magical and with some rpg elements, isn't enough to keep me engaged. This looks pretty cool, but as a strictly linear, story based game, there's just not enough value per dollar imo. If there was some cool, zippy, magical pvp (minus battlepasses and mtx, I'd be willing to spend my money. But as it stands, it just looks like CoD with more particle effects.
Thanks for the Before You Buy, Jake! Love and appreciate ya, bud. Now to continue waiting for ACVI and Starfield.

So, so true on the skill tree. You might've sold me on it on that alone, because I can't remember the last time I played something with a meaningful skill tree. It's always like:
Ohh, so I can take this skill and get +1. 5% damage, or this one where I get +1% damage resistance. I sure do love a leveling system that's basically a streamlined spreadsheet simulator, where you get none of the fun of a true crunchy spreadsheet simulator, but also none of that pesky variety of a creative unique skill tree. This is fun. I'm having fun.

I'm very excited for this but I waited for reviews and since pc seems to have some graphical issues as most games have nowadays I'll just be waiting until they get this sorted and then I'll get the EA pass for a month and play this one.
I've gotta agree, I'm kinda worn out on the AAA 100+ hour open world rpgs thats filled with nonsense just to make the game longer. Refreshing to see these more linear story games. I'd rather have 10-30h of a good game rather than 100+ of just meh

I always hate the idea of First Person Fingergunner gameplay. This includes BioShock's plasmids. This comes across like a developer prioritizing something different over something good. FPSes depicting you holding a gun out in front of your face around eye level looks silly enough as it is, but imagining this doof holding his open hand straight out as he runs around looks a hundred times dumber. and then Jake tells us you need to reload your magic for whatever reason.

I don't like fps personally(I suck lol) I prefer my pixelated rpgs. BUT! I do like the sound of magic in fps. I do love me some good fantasy story like in Baldurs Gate 3. Sooo maybe I'l check this one out! Or put it on my radar. So many games coming out in the end of the year that I'm interested in It's crazy(Like Starfield or Mortal Kombat1) Maybe I'll get it on sale when I see it. Love the videos you guys do I always see games I've never thought of playing before!

This looks like the slowest, clunkiest first person shooter to come along in a while. Imagine placing a gun in the hands instead of colourful circles, and then marvel at how slow and boring the movement is when the bright shiny lights aren't fooling you. No using cover, no moving for a batter angle, no flanking, just holding forward and shooting the enemy directly in front of you. boring af mechanics. It honestly just looks like mobile gameplay with good graphics.

All the people not wanting to pay full price because it's not a huge 50 hour RPG - you know you're part of the problem right? YOU are the reason games are becoming longer and longer, and open worlds are becoming more common, the very same thing you complain about you are causing because you will only spend money ON THOSE THINGS as a result of your false equivalence between length and value.

For people who are busy with life, these are the good games. 11 to 12 hours of content seems perfect for me. It's hard to make myself dedicate more than that amount of time to any game, anyway, unless they're pretty much masterpieces. This seems very interesting. Sad to see them insist on the full price tag, though. I'd happily spend something like 30 for this game, but not more.

Hey Jake. I've been watching Gameranx and following your stuff for close to a decade. The other day my Dad tells me he watches that Jake Ballarino (nice try, Dad) you know, the before you buy guy. He then did his best attempt at the Jake in a suit hands out in front pose. You know you've come a long way when a man in his sixties knows your gimmick. Well done sir.

I pre ordered it. From what Im seeing, it looks fun. Obviously, my time frame to play it right now will be limited bc Im focused on many other great games right now. But I will agree it looks refreshing but a little sad that I paid full price for only 20hrs max. So hopefully it will maybe get some more attention or dlc.

If nothing else, the devs nailed the Noun-of-Generic Fantasy Proper Noun naming convention. Immortals of whatever it s called (already forgot, fits perfectly into the lexicon of ambiguous video game naming tropes, alongside Kingdoms of Amalur, Story of Seasons, Tales
Of Vesperia, etc.

The dumbest thing about these hand shooting console FPS games is that your arm is always stretched forward
Member when they made FPS games for PC and devs started to get smarter about these body awareness things? like 20+ years ago, before Halo ruined everything again

I wish we could make it an industry standard that first person games should have a third person mode. Even if it's DLC and costs extra. This game looks amazing, but FPS perspective scrambles my senses and I can't tell what is going on and then my eyes ache and I need to lie down.

I had no idea about this game, but it does look like my type of game. I have kids and don t really want to spend 50 hrs into a game before I get something out of it. It s nice to just have something that I can relax and play for an hour or two and feel like I ve done something.

Well considering the minimum requirements I can see why PC might be having some problems. I realize the visuals can be demanding but damn. Minimum RTX 2080 (8gb, Core-i7 9700, and that's just to run at 1080p. I mean geez you can run Jedi Survivor with a GTX 1070.

It's unfortunate for the timing of this game. I LOVE linear action adventure games, but being right in between baldurs gate 3 and starfield. There isn't enough time in the day. Added to wishlist and wait for sale down the road during slower time period.

At this point, I will pay more for a 20 hour game than a 100 hour game. A hundred hours of slog is too mush sometimes. But a well crafted experience that ends when it needs to? I value that more these days. I'll be checking this one out.

This wasn't on my radar, but its definitely going on my buy later list (which is getting larger by the day ) getting some guardians vibes, could get lost in traffic of games coming out but I think this studio has a bright future ahead
