From what I saw, the devs try to play safe with the history between countries but without even realised they make it even worse. I mean, they want to create a game based on 1600ce. and from what I know, S&B project has some kind of relation with Singapore government. So, there might be some indirect political factor involve in order to introduce the culture of Singaporean to world's eye. Let say my assumption
is true, Singapore doesn't have any glorious history to begin with back in the days as an empire. So the challenge is, if they want to create a game that include Singapore (Temasik) as an important spot during that era, they need to dig histories from Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei too because these 4 countries were in one big kingdom in ancient times and shared the same history.
Most of the Ubi Sg higher position staff are Singaporean Chinese, so their knowledge of the Malay Kingdom at that time might be minimal. Lack of research and studies it seems. This is known when they tried to portray Telok Penjarah looks like a Chinese town, whereas at that time the Chinese only came to Malaya as traders. They are not local people in the country as we see in the game.
The biggest towns and ports at that time were in Malacca (Fort Harimau) and Jakarta (Megafort Oosten. it's funny they didnt created these 2 main town based on true history like what they did in AC. But decided to create fictional Telok Penjarah and made the 2 biggest trading centre in the region as forts and we couldn't even land in those forts. This is like an insult to Malaysia and Indonesia histories lol.
Maybe they want to create S&B exactly like Ac series at first. But, knowing the historical challenge that they might face, they changed their plan to focus up only in naval battle because they dont want to take risks in complicated historical journey in Malaya if they tried to make it RPG like AC.
I always look up to Ubisoft when they come up with a history based game like AC because they manage to portray history pretty well in the game. But never thought they messed it up to this level. It just unfinished and unpolished game to me.

Live service games are inherently flawed in which they ironically lack longetevity. They tend to be simplified gameplay loop as an effort to be addicting while giving you the next big thing to be excited about. It just doesn't work.
I saw a tweat ages ago. Stop making multiplayer the main focus of video games. There was a time where single player was the focus, then multiplayer was an addiction. Which recent example Diablo 4, which you could argue is partially service. But there was definitely a tailored single player experience which made it feel like a full game.

I'm not even sure where to begin with my comment since my thoughts are in more than one direction about it. A game that could have been a great release if it was fully thought out and decided on which way to go with it before working on it. The title alone suggests it could have been its own game set during the golden age of piracy. Imagine an option to play as a pirate captain with a crew and take on jobs for kings. Form alliances with other pirates, treasure hunting and so on. I can also imagine another option to play as a regular pirate looking to join a crew.

I don’t understand how any developer fails. I’m so serious. Maybe completely new ips or moving to a genre the studio has never been in before I could see. Any other failure on this level is just mind boggling. The ENTIRE gaming community is loud enough on social media that there’s just no possible way any studio should fail to deliver on the general idea of the game. Maybe graphics or glitches being bad and needing fixed after launch but the way the story/gameplay loop is designed is so easy to find what the fans want. Just embarrassing.

No foot combat was what was the deal breaker for me. Come on having a badass duel on a boat with the opposing captain while all hell breaks loose in the background was my phantasy for this game. And what do we get A Pirate skin of World of Warships with comparable graphics. It might be serviceable but no way in hell are they getting my money, never has a game done less with more potential. I understand making a game is hard but sometimes i feel like i could give a better outline

Simple Solution stop making live service games. Instead do like they did back in the day and just make a really great full and complete game that people will just love to play for years. There's so many older games that I love to play so much that if they ever just randomly decided to make DLC for them I would buy it and play them even more than I do. Simply because the games are amazing not because it's some dumb live service garbage.

It's really simple. Companies like Ubisoft just aren't interested in developing games anymore. They develop products. Profit is the only driver. The only thing that's shocking is that they managed to drop the ball so badly. This was a shoein. More ACIV pirate stuff. That's all anybody wanted. Maybe a bit of coop action. Instead we got poor-mans Sea of Thieves. Because Ubisoft are too busy trying to jump on the FOTM. Because profits.

What happened! The heck do you mean what happened! It’s called poor upper management of an IP and wasting talent, time and more money than anyone in the comment section could dream about having. I hate to beat a dead horse, but all they had to do is refine what they had in Black Flags, and expand. But no, they made it a live service garbage game with Nice graphics. What is with bloated budgets and lack luster products.

The problem with Skull & Bones is that they promised us the most in-depth pirate game we've ever seen which I'm always nervous when developers do that. However, due to delays & them making decisions like having no on-foot combat people myself included started to lose interest in their game so they quickly pivoted put a game together & shipped it out.

Man, some triple A game makers don't seem to get that most of their concepts for a good game doesn't seem to take what gamers want into account. I get wanting to make a game that will blow the doors off the industry, but there's no way I'd develop anything without input; be it surveys, beta testers. hell, even the developers themselves.

At this point we shouldn't be surprised with things like this: : just in the last years, how many games went wrong Every since top people saw money in videogames it became a downhill situation. sadly. Games have evolved to competition and stuff like that and the gaming comunity became kinda forgotten. :/ Ty for an amazing content!

Apparently the people at Ubisoft haven’t heard the phrase if it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it
They got it right in black flag, granted had the used to much of the stuff from black flag gamers would have prob complained some about that also, but atleast it would have been a pretty good game, prob anyway.

This is why i call ubisoft, boobysoft. Cause they cant make a good decision to save their life. Same goes for activision. Who would have thought, in 2024, we would be saying hey, EA has made a few bangers recently. And seeing other companies replace them as the most hated. I dont think anybody saw that coming.

I am so tickled to continue seeing AAA game companies churn out uninspired crap while indies, A and AA continue to hit home runs. It's time for the big names in gaming to sit down and really think about what they've allowed themselves to become.
Some industries were only ever meant to stay small.

Thing is, as soon as a studio commits to developing a specific live service game’ you know the major decisions are just about how much money they can make over time. The idea of actually making a fun game is secondary. Players can smell that a mile off, and understandably don’t like being seen as ATM’s.

What went wrong UBISOFT was the problem here. they literally could have cut out the Assassins missions, Slapped skull and bones on the box and people would have been stoked. Prime example of trying to re-invent the wheel. SO disappointed. Another game we waited a decade for that sucks in the end.

They spend lots of $$$ making games that will mostly get pirated, since many people are frustrated with bugs and technical issues. Or the fact they don't want to pay $60 to $70 for a game they can't get a refund on halfway through the game when it turns out worse than when they started playing it!

A deal with the government of Singapore, where the main development studio making the game is based, is providing generous subsidies. The conditions of these subsidies include hiring people at the Ubisoft Singapore studio, and the studio releasing original IPs over the next few years.

Just make a micro (highly detailed Caribbean, not Continental) Civ 5 with badass ship building tech trees/battling to break it up, extending game length hundreds of hours overall, add some minor expansions and minor micro transactions to finance it and watch the money roll in
