I believe that Daisy was more than just a pet. I believe that since he was single, whether he chose to be or not, she became like a child to him since he had no children. His oath to protect those who can't protect themselves and his tendencies to over react and act without thinking about the consequences got his ass in trouble.
As for his mental health, he most likely started losing it when he got back home and saw all the devastation. All that death he saw and hearing the sounds of the dying and from the survivors and seeing his personal loss most likely made him wake up screaming in the middle of the night.
As a result, he decided to take all that he was feeling and make them see what someone who has lost everything and doesn't care if he wakes up the next day can do. I believe that he quit talking because he got sick and tired of talking about his past. Because more he talked about it the more damage it. So he decided to let his weapons do the talking.
I believe that the reason why the Maker is doing everything she can to stop him is that she is scared because she knows what he can do and can't understand the oath to protect the innocent and just can't understand that even though he has been there for God knows how long. You will never forget the oath you took and where you came from.

This just hit me. Here me out please. What if both arguments about the Family Man theory was true. Just think about it for a second.
In original BJB timeline and the fact that no family was mentioned in DOOM 93 makes it seem unlikely that he had a family.
Since the BJB TIMELINE now takes place in a completely different reality. Him having a family would be more likely.
This is my take on it.

Very few probably noticed this but the slayer's words -Guts, more guts. - is a reference to the DooM comic 'Knee Deep Into the Dead' where doomguy constantly repeats that he needs to rip more demon guts. Thus, the DooM comic is made canon!

28: 43 I am a novice but what did I miss? Isn't he supposed to be surrounded by buffed demons a few seconds from now. Seems like they spawned late and he quickly managed to get to the Archvile defeating him craftily.

Good job man, nice gameplay. Although I can-t help but let it bother me when you come across a pinky demon and have blood punch ready and don-t use it on him. Bloodpunch will take him out in one hit head on. --

I have this crazy theory: SAMUEL Hayden and SAMUR, the archangel who gives the Slayer access to the machine, are the same guy. Even the Codex mentions Hayden having Argent technology in his robotic suit.

So in the same quote they finally revealed the truth about the Slayer being the OG Doom Marine, the game not being a reboot AND used a reference for the Doom comic.
