G- General Audiences (Paddington, Toy Story)
PG- Parental Guidence Recommended (Tangled, Caroline)
M (Basically PG-13 or Soft R)- Recommended for mature audiences (The King's Speech, The Avengers)
MA15+ (Basically R)- (Mad Max Fury Road, The Hangover)
R18+ (Basically Hard R or NC-17)- (The Godfather, Requiem For a Dream)
X18+ - Basically Porn but it's only available in one state for some reason

my rating system
0+ - G, PG, or mild PG-13
10+ - moderate PG-13 to hard PG-13 (children under 10 not admitted without a parent) movies like black panther or terminator 4 and 5
13+ - severe PG-13 (like the dark knight) to mild or moderate R ( children under 13 not admitted without a parent) like mad max fury road and deadpool
16+ - hard R like the godfather and saw ( no one under 16 allowed)
18+ - severe R like wolf on wall street or NC-17 (no one under 18 allowed)

The R rating really baffles me because technically there's no minimum age (providing there is a parent or guardian, I've heard stories of dumb parents bringing their kids to see Watchmen, because by their logic, superhero movie = for kids. That film has an R rating for a reason, people!
The rough UK equivalent would be a 15, and it's a strict no one under 15 can see this in the cinema or buy this, PERIOD. It's just common sense to me.

Good thumbnail outline of the history (most of which I remember. I was surprised he skipped the transition from M to PG, which he didn't even mention (as well as the misleading GP that served in between them. Also, it probably wouldn't have been hard to find the original 1968 artwork used for the G-M-R-X system; what we see in that frame is not the original, but a modified version of what came later.

These days G rated films are extinct, PG is pretty much G and PG-13 films are usaully on the same level as PG 80s flicks. R rated films are actually alot more violent and inopropriate then the ones in the 80s and 90s. Films like logan, deapool, mad max fury road, and fredy vs jason are akot more violent then friday the 13, the matrix, the good the bad and the ugly, and a nightmare on elmstreet.

Age ratings suck! Whoever is in charge of restricting people from watching movies is on crack! It is insulting to restrict anyone from watching a movie due to age. Films should never be rated, The kids should be able to choose what they want to watch, I'm sorry but society really shouldn't enforce these Nazi rules on kids. MPAA sucks, and the people in charge of it are on crack.

G - General Audiences: All Ages Admitted
PG - Parental Guidance Suggested: Some Material May NOT Be Suitable For Children
PG-13 - Parents Strongly Cautioned: Some Material May Be Inappropriate For Children Under 13

I have something to add for my Canadian movie ratings post from 2 years ago, Quebec has their own rating system but theirs is weird, they got:
-G (anything rated in English Canada G, PG or 14A
-13+ (hard 14A and 18A)
-16+ (hard 18A, not many get it)
But there's also 18+ for porn but that's not talked much and for regular movies

reply

In Canada, we get this system:
-G (Pixar films, Most DreamWorks films, Rugrats, etc)
-PG (Clueless, Austin Powers, Breakfast Club, Thomas Crown Affair, Ferris Beuller)
-14a (Carrie, Indecent Proposal, American Pie, South Park, Hot Tub Time Machine)
-18a (Fatal Attraction, The Godfather, Crank)
-R (Basic Instinct, Scarface)

In Finland we have:
(S/T) for everyone
(7) no kid under 7 are allowed to watch
(12) no kid under 12 are allowed to watch
(16) no kid under 16 are allowed to watch.
(18) no kid or young people are allowed to watch the movie.
We also have content signals, which are similar from PEGI rating.
Simple age rating: )

These are what the ratings really stand for:
G = Good
PG = Pretty Good
PG-13 = Pretty Good. for 13 year olds
R = Radical (either the movie is radical, or it's for radical audiences, interpret as you wish)
NC-17 = Not Cool even for 17 year olds.

reply

NC-17 is the kiss of death for any film because it won't get promoted, it won't be shown in hardly any movie theaters, and few people will know about it. That's why many R rated films have an unrated version of the film when it's released on DVD or Blu-Ray.
reply

Canada
G-anyone allowed in
PG-anyone allowed in
14A must be 14+ to watch alone if under 14- you need an adult to view it
18A must be 18+ to view it alone if under 18 you need an adult to view it alone.
R only people 18 or older can view it

reply

Hilariously, most R rated films in America are 14-A here in Canada, like I don't mean Keanu, I mean stuff like Deadpool is only 14-A in Canada around 90% of R's in America are 14-A's in Canada, then there's Quebec, who gave Deadpool pg-13. Oh god Quebec
reply

Here's how MPAA is inaccurate. It may be more consistent than other film boards, but.
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles rating = Hostel/Saw rating
Both are R.
Which is more inappropriate to you? 20-something F-words or lots of sadistic violence?

reply

In Assault on Precinct 13, they got away with an X-Rated scene where an 11 year old girl (who asked for a twisted vanilla ice cream and got the regular vanilla instead) was shot by one of the gang bangers. Despite it, the film gets away with an R Rating.
reply

IMO the rating system is pretty arbitrary. A lot of movies that are stuck between ratings may as well be decided by coin toss. It should just list what kind of content is in the movie and have the parent/person decide.
reply

The whole lax on violence and tough on swearing is totally true! Perfect example: Pokemon! I know it sounds crazy since it is a kids show. but animals fighting, shit blowing up, characters dying, and all rated G. Dafuk?
reply

Clearly I started watching R-Rated Movies when I was 15 years old and then a year later I started watching TV-MA stuff in Television I actually don't care about the adult content in R-Rated Movies
reply

the MPAA my way
NB = newborn babies
GA = general audiences
M = big kids 10+
M-13 = for teenagers 13+
X = adults 18+
X-20 = nobody 19- is allowed to watch the movie
