Griffin gets a Digital Bolex update from Elle Schneider and Joe Rubinstein at the SXSW Trade Show. The D16 camera is almost complete, should have working models at NAB. Product will launch with accessories ready, like lenses and lens turret. Watch Griffin's previous interview with the Digital Bolex team Cineloud: Have you ever used a classic Bolex H16 with turret lenses. It is the most convenient tool when you're on the field. You would not believe how much time is saved. Although, I do agree with you on the fact that a maximum resolution of 2K is a little subpar nowadays.

I'd like to know the specs on the camera, the stuff that would convince me into waiting for it instead of going out and buying a black magic today, because ulitimatly, they're the main competition for a raw camera from $3-6k. BlackMagic's cons are mainly it's batterty life and that it transfers data on ssd drives. If a comparison came out between the two, either through indymogul or digital bolex themselves I'd probably consider waiting for the bolex instead of buying the BM now

I don't like the Bolex and the Turret thing. This may funny to have this old school look on a new camera but i still would prefer ARRI, RED, Sony, Blackmagic. Also the Design is a kind of unhandy so if it would have a normal cube design it would be much more better to handle. I think they are more carrying about the actual Design then for working functions like a bigger sensor. All the production sounds like We are just too poor for good functions, so we have a nice design

While I'll be excited to see the cameras rolling off of the assembly line and wish them the best of luck, I'm not convinced that the Digital Bolex will ever expand beyond a cool hipster device. At $3299 (the suggested retail price, I quickly look over at the Black Magic Cinema Camera and start to scratch my head. More options/variations is a good thing, but I do wonder how this will unfold.

I don't get what so exciting about this camera. Besides the fact that it shoots 4K, what isn't that unieke, and the retro form-factor (what seems really useless to me, I rather prefer a ergonomic camera with lots of easy to reach buttons and room for hardware extention like extra mic's, lights, batteries, steadycam-supports, it hasn't any practical use that makes it special.

you don't need uncomressed for greenscreen. Uncomresssed gives you more data to work with when colorgrading/correcting. I'f you're new to cinematograpy i would suggest starting out with something less complicated, something like a dslr or a camcorder. Editing raw can be quite tricky if you're unexperienced.

Thanks. I've been trying to finger out a good camera for my needs. However I've worked with the 7D and been unhappy with the compression noise I've had to deal with, while keying. Same with HDV. I've worked with Camera Raw before, just not in video.

So, I'm not sure I understand what this is, because cameras are still not my strong point. A digital 16MM camera? Can I do motion picture quality with it? Is this affordable for me? Oh wait, there's another video about it. I'll watch that.

Awesome! I will be adding this to my arsenal! Just think of the shot design possibilities! Exciting development. Which bolex lenses are there to choose from? The standard10mm, 16mm, 25mm, 85mm? Or will there be more options?

I still say the Bolex looks like a larger version of one of 1960's Star Trek's phasers! Not a bad thing actually. Love the Retro look with the Contemporary Tech! YEAH. Very cool indeed!

I would go one step further and say that you are basically setting yourself up for failure if you jump from zero to uncompressed in one jump. That's not a rule, more a guideline.

My salivary glands have dried up after the months of reading about this camera. Hoping to get one by the fall. It is everything an indie documentary filmmaker could hope for!
reply

Well, most professional have a shoulder rig for generally stabilizing cameras, whether its a dslr, blackmagic, or RED. But an eyepiece would be nice, granted.

I've been looking into possibly purchasing the Kineraw S35 for a little while now but the more I see about the Digital Bolex the more interested I am in it.
reply

This might be a good camera for me, because I want to shoot clean green screen, and uncompressed would probably be ideal. Am I wrong in assuming so?
reply

I don't know whether I can take the camera seriously in terms of aesthetics. Wouldn't it look strange to be carrying this around on set?
