Location Shooting Agreement Template NoLight: It depends on how many people you have and the requirements. This situation was unique because they were specifically asking for the ally to be specifically set off just for their shoot. It would be the same as when a major movie shoots a scene in New York; it isn't free because they have to cut off the area and use it for a specific purpose. If you're just running-and-gunning, you don't need it because it's public property and you have the right to record. Hope I cleared that up a bit: )

This episode has been SO helpful. just one question, please and thanks.
I want to shoot a few scenes in a forest (when I'm sure of the date of shooting, I'll contact a nearby squirrel reserve) but need a prop weapon on location.
how do I go about getting permission to use the prop on-set? I know I need to notify the authorities, but do I also ask permission from the reserve? Being a student of filmmaking, I'm hoping to use that fact to win points. thanks for reading!

I lucked out on my recent music video shoot for My Hollow. The land owner, the transport authority that rents the land from him and the city film office were all happy to let me use the location. for free! Couldn't use their trash receptacles and had to shoot when there were no busses running. so no issues there. Took about three months from inquiry to sign-off by all parties. Definitely pays to ask.

I really like that you made this informational video. Iv been trying to find information about stuff on this for a day or so now and I wasn't able to find anything that usefull. Like all the information was there but it didn't seem as straight forward as this video. I was just getting confused trying to figure it all out till i saw your video here. Thank's for posting it man.

Thanks for this. Location scouting and securing is quite the task. I needed a bar scene for one of my shorts and there was a 500, 000 insurance fee and other charges I wasn't prepared for. I knew I had to go about it the right way, but then I ended up shooting in an outside area. I'm trying to get better at this though, so I'll use this advice in the future.

You'd probably want to have your parents call if everyone involved in the production is under 18, and it would probably help to have adult supervision on set to make the location comfortable, but it's still worth a shot! Saying it's for a school project could probably help immensely, just make sure everyone is on their best behavior, lol.

Hey what about when using prop (but realistic) looking guns. Do you just alert whoever you can around and post signs or do you have to call the police and tell them what you're doing? If you do have to call authorities are they going to make sure you have a license to shoot on the property or not? Any feedback would be great. Thanks!

My stuff is a little out of focus, and the ISO was turned up quite high for my parts as well. The unfortunate consequence of shooting alone in the dark, lol. The focus thing bugged me, since it looked right on the screen when I was filming myself. My apologies!

Hey, i wanted to film a short film in an ally or something like you guys and the problem is that there is going to be screaming involved in the film. would i need to contact the owner of the property and the town, or how does that work.

So I understand that you have to do stuff like this if you're planning a big shoot somewhere, but is it illegal to film, say, just a few brief shots in a store if all you've got is one actor and one guy with a camcorder?
reply

Hi Russel! If you will shot in the convenience store you need to hide all the products brands? like Coke, Marlboro, and any other? if the short film is just for Festivals and Internet you need permission from all that brands?

In the interest of moving things along quicker! If you miss the longer version of the theme (some people mentioned that when I first shortened it, you can find the full song at the link I just added in the description. Enjoy!

7 years later this content is still solid. Walking through the phone call is also sure helpful, as most YT videos today would just leave it at contact the location and move on the the next point

How legal is this document? dont you need a lawyer or something like that?
(since im not from USA I assume it will depend for each country/state, but I'd be nice to have some guidance)

reply

Hey Chris, when we had a loud scene we dropped leaflets in surrounding properties' letterboxes about a week before the shoot with times and contact details if they had any problems.
reply

Wait Russel, you say you had to get permits and pay for shooting the film in that PUBLIC ally, I thought you have the right to film in any public space, permit or not?
reply

Hey Russell, this is a bit unrelated, but I know your a premiere pro user and was wondering if you create animated lower thirds and etc every time or use a template.
reply

I'm from germany too - create your own by translating it. Also, that way, if you're not happy with anything in the agreement, you can just leave it out.
reply

So i cant just bring a video recorder to a park and just do a little shot? Lol cuz im gnna be strting off by myself with these short films and im poor
