Great question. That would definitely lower the exposure, but shortening the shutter speed also removes natural-looking motion blur, creating a stutter between frames. That's why the general rule of thumb is shutter that's half the framerate. (24 fps = 1/50s, 30fps = 1/60s)
You could also close the aperture, but that increases your depth of field. That's why ISO exists, so you can change exposure while keeping aperture and shutter constant, but when you run out of ISO to change, you need an ND.

I really wish they could of put some type of mini lockable audio connector on the GH3 / GH2. How hard would it of been to have a mini jack with a screw in connector. I've heard some folks hot gluing a right angle connector on the outside of a GH2. I had planned to open the GH2 up and solder a wire but the connector looks somewhat unaccessible. I ran a presonus firebox on batteries with my high end boom mic Audio technica 4073 into GH2 and it sounded great - a portable XLR field mixer for $200!

I took a journalism class so I suggest taking a journalism class to sort of help out with that, but what I can tell you is use questions that relate to facts about people their background and also use est questions which means using question which include using est so in other words questions like what's your greatest accomplishment? What's your biggest fear? What's been your biggest project? What's been your hardest project? Also try to avoid using first person words such as I

Thanks for you videos, they're very helpful. I'm a still photographer that is getting into videography, in particular, I'm shooting live music. I was considering the Reflex LR10 (I have a D800 and I thought the bigger shoulder rig might be better for the bigger camera plus it has a long handle that seems that it would work better for very low shots. Looks like a quality unit at a great price. Would you buy the Reflex again? Any other possibilities that I should consider?

Hey guys and gals of the Internet. I am a 14 year old filmmaker that is trying to fund my first short film, and you could help me with it! Just the smallest donation to my indiegogo campaign would really help me out! By going to my campaign you can see what I am going to do with the money and what the film is about! Just go to my newest video and click on the link in the description if you're interested! Thank you so much in advance!

I'd love to hear about your workflow for the doc. How you log the footage, how you select the keywords and smart folders, I assume your going to use FCPx: . Some folks have done some really big projects on FCPx and for organizing footage it rocks. Will you use multiple events, how many clips do you have, markers, keywords etc. Even my little mac mini can handle 1000 clips 10 hours. Have you looked at Lumberjack and other logging tools?

good info. A while back I flew from NJ to SFO for a doco interview series. Air Tran, I had all my clothes camera, lav, cables shoved in the carry on. I followed the rules and then sat there and watched other passengers come on with bags so large they could have carried a dead body or two. I borrowed lights and tripod when I got to town, that saved a lot (as well as staying at a former colleagues home.

That's a good guideline, but sometimes it's worth breaking if you want a different look, or if you need it just a little darker. You can close your aperture, but that will make more of the frame in focus. It's another tradeoff that you may or may not be willing to deal with.
An ND filter is certainly not a must-have piece of gear, but it makes my life easier.

One more thing, I'm a posting Demond today. did you like the variable ND filter, some of the reviews on Amazon said it was crap. Just curious if it added any strange color shift but perhaps you've not viewed the footage: ( Ok, I swear I'm done and well do on the documentary mate, look forward to hearing all about it in these videos.

Sounds like a bitrate issue, that your videos are getting super compressed. Look for a setting to increase the quality, or manually raise the bitrate. This video is H. 264-compressed at 3Mbps. For higher quality, I sometimes go to 5Mbps or 8Mbps. I consider 15Mbps broadcast quality, but that's too big and unnecessary for web video.

I'm not a perfect interviewer, but generally stay away from yes/no questions, because timid interviewees will resort to one-word answers. I start out with easy (or throwaway) questions, because they may not get comfortable and act natural until question 3 or 4. (Sometimes I revisit a question at the end, to get a better answer)

Yeah, this is dramatically different (worse) audio!
It's a heavy backpack, especially with a laptop in it, but it's much easier to lug around than a shoulder-strap camera bag. If I leave a few unnecessary items at the hotel, it's no problem wearing the backpack while shooting. So it's a super mobile setup.

The audio files are in order, so with only 12 interviews, it's not too hard to figure out which ones match up. I listen to each for a second to verify before starting the synchronization. I also import them into FCPX at the end of each day, so it's easy to keep them organized.

So do you think that we should never go higher than the double of the FPS that we are recording?
I mean if I'm shooting 60 FPS should never go higher than 120 as shutter speed?
What if I increase the F-stop instead of using a nd filter?
Thanks for the reply!

is there a reason you went with the panasonic 12-35mm lens over something like the tamron 17-50mm 2. 8? for $250 and a 25 dollar adapter you can get a 17-50mm 2. 8 lens that doesnt lose focus or aperture when zooming. Does the panny lens look better?

How do you ask questions in your documentary? Because many people just ask questions and then there silence so actually my question is how do you get a fluid interview? I'm making my own documentary next week about magnetic radiation. :)

Hey. Loved the doc! You say in this video that you never got to use the GoPro? I think i remember a shot clip from the fatory where a camara is placed on a conveyor. It had that fish eye look? Hmm. Maybe im wrong. Anyhow great work.

I see you sprung for the $1000 lens. I remember an episode a while back where you said you bought a 35-105 canon FD lens. You don't use it anymore? Don't like it? I'm asking because I'm going to buy one because of your previous advice.

You talk about it a lot, but this example is the best I've seen, proving how important sound is!
Thanks for the look in the bag, Griffin! is it not tiresome lugging around such a big backpack? How heavy is it? Thanks, again!

reply

You can argue Macs are overpriced, but I've grown to love the interface and FCPX. I spend every day working with it, and it's where all my income comes from, so I'm very happy with the investment.
