04: 52: FBI agents have no idea whether someone tells the truth or not. Seriously? Not sure you need to do a lot of scientific research, including blind tests to come to this conclusion. Just need basic observation of interrogation techniques across the world, and consider that they are all based on various degrees of physical or psychological abuse to beat out the truth or destabilize enough the suspect to get a confession (lots of false positives by the way. If it was possible to read people, the first requirement to expect this to work would be to come into the interrogation with an open mind and no prejudice regarding whether or not the suspect is the perpetrator. It seems that in real life the interrogation starts with the assumption that we got the right guy. If mindreading is involved, it can only be at play to confirm bias, so not quite what one would call mindreading literacy. :-)

I have to get this book, because I am a matched person. Happy, I look it, I emote when speaking to people and it attracts them and makes people feel cumfy and safe. I have always been this way and of course became an actor lol BUT my husband and my daughter both, do not do this. birthdays, no excitement, they smile and say thank you but if excitement goes to 10, never above a 5 lol Sad, mad, enjoyment YOU CANNOT tell on their faces. It irks me but I live with it. they say, we're just not like you. excited about everything but when I am mad I let people know too. they keep it in, I find. anyway. MATCHING, I wonder when this is taught or is it nature rather than nurture? Interesting.

That's why Friends works. It's a fantasy. I mean the first episode says how confused everyone is. And then, everyone is happy from them on and loves their jobs, and has money, nice clothes, nice apartments, etc. if they kept the idea of the pilot, everyone would hate the show. The british show Coupling, does a great job at showing how complicated life is, annd they show how fun it can be too.

I don't think Gladwell is telling the truth about detectives. So virtually no one knows who is telling the truth he says? He needs to write large 'GOING SOLELY ON BODY LANGUAGE'. There are so many ways of discovering the truth that it's nonsense to say that you can't tell as though it's a blanket rule.

He is fascinating! Jimmy should have more guests like him. I'm tired of hearing celebs promoting their tv shows and movies and books that they wrote. I watched this at 3. 15am. Totally got my brain juices running. Mr Malcolm Gladwell, you are awesome!

If you were watching Friends to get a dose of reality, then YOU are the problem. It was silly entertainment. It was not intended to send any kind of messages. This is overthinking at it's worst but he has certainly sparked my interest.

Too simplistic, people want to be right about human brains, they want to be right about their hypothesis, just reframing words and saying new stuff doesn't help that much. Probably an interesting read, though.

2: 23 The plot of a Friends episode is very straightforward. It's out of a scripwriting 101 class. You want to see it as more complicated so you can float another of your unsupported, ridiculous theories.

Hes right: It would be impossible to try to describe the plot of an episode of Friends. Way too complex. Thankfully we have an intellectual like Gladwell to explain things to us commoners.

I LOVE Malcolm Gladwell. I'm turned on by intelligence, & find him so attractive.
Many highly intelligent people struggle socially, but MG is funny and knows how to work a room.
