Rocket launchers, machine guns and oil slicks. Why? Because apparently just building a city was so lame. it just had to be taken to the extreme, and so a vehicular combat game based around Sim City was born

Here I am, 11 years from the future to comment on this. I actually have the most fond memories of this game. My first PC was something thrown together from spare parts I built with my stepdad. I don't remember the specs, I do remember that I threw in an old 5. 25 floppy drive in their because I love those things. And I remember that we originally tried to put the original Windows NT on it, but that never worked and eventually we got a Windows 98 disc for all the PC's in the house. However, this was one of the few games I had for my own PC. In the early to mid 2000's, I played this a lot when I wasn't on my N64 or a PS1 I got later on. I liked it because I could go into MS Paint and modify the car paintjobs. It's what got me into editing textures, a skill that came in handy when I became a VTuber. I know, it's FAR from the best vehicular combat game from it's era. However, I have fond memories of this game.

when you talk about the graphics i'm drawing a blank on any of the issues, ya i remember some of the bugs and the horrible AI, and the terrible draw distance but choppy graphics and system crashes? i played this on mid 2000s computers and an ibm thinkpad from the early 2000s and had none of the choppy graphics, everything loaded quickly.
maybe this game and the engine was just a little too much for what the computers of 1996-97 could handle but it did get much better with age. right before it and other late 90's 3D games became unplayable
the pixel art was something wholly its own, a style of chariccature that died out in the late 90s but really looks funny and conveys the weird game at the same time

This game was a childhood favourite of mine. even though it did not age very well. I always liked the idea of building cities in Skurk, and then loading this game crusing around and blowing shit up. at least until the machine guns started shooting blanks for no reason. That was the appeal to me.
.
Campaign was mixed for me. Hated the truck delivery missions. Thought Grandma's missions were interesting. I remember liking the cop dude protagonist from one of the campaigns because he sounded exactly like Cornfed from Duckman. -mmmmm. needs more line and BAIT-
imo Carmageddon and Death Rally were superior, but this game is still a guilty pleasure. :)

I remembering mastering this game to perform pretty much perfect 90 degree turns. The physics was just silly. Building new tracks for it was great though. I particularly liked doings a map with nothing but airport, running it in SC2k, then slapping a race track on it. Best feature by far, the SC2k integration. Someone below mentioned SC4 but I think nowadays, cities skylines might be a better base. Can you really see EA redoing this game?

I remember buying this game just to visit my cities in 3d. I don't think I actually ever bothered with anything other than the -Sunday Driving- mode, or whatever it was called. The best part was flying around the city using the hover equipment. Sadly it didn't render a lot of buildings and other things correctly, including the freeway. The radio was awesome, though.

This game shined where it technically wasn't supposed to - freeroam as opposed to 'career'. Ironically, that's pretty much how GTA started: they were trying to make some racing game, but once the police cars started crashing into the player's car, the beta testers loved it, and it was decided to leave it in and fashion the game in the 'crime action' genre.

I liked that you could drive around in the cities you built more than any of the missions. I guess that's what is cool about the Sims later on in gaming history, but I never played the Sims because I thought I needed to grow up instead of gaming. Gaming these days is pretty lame. There have only been a few titles to catch my eye. It's all been done.

When you started off by complaining that this was a deviation from Maxis' toy-like games, I wanted to interrupt to say -Streets is very much a toy. - But you basically said the same originally. I had fun with this game, myself. Yeah, it was dumb. Even at the time, I wanted it to be better/more than it was. But it was still really cool.

This is one of those games where the gameplay is tied to the speed of the CPU (LGR talks about this in his Turbo Button video. I remember on Windows XP, cars would travel too fast to be enjoyable, and then the game would crash in ten minutes. On any later versions of Windows, the game would crash almost instantly.
