Retro games are great, but the next best thing is a new game for retro hardware! And as far as homebrew goes, you can't get much more high-profile than Halo. This is a review of the Halo 2600 cart by Ed Fries. Recorded and played using an Atari 7800, RF output with a PC capture device. Play it online here

No I was a kid too way back then. I played the 2600 for what it was but hated the graphics and bips. The graphics in the arcade at the time we're heads over the 2600 at the time with Pac Man, Millipede, Quartet, Gauntlet, Zaxxon, Pengo, Joust, Defender, Dig Dug, Berzerk, Donkey Kong Jr, Venture, Spy Hunter, Up and Down, and Pole Position arcade versions looked SO much better than the 2600 games. And then Silver Spoons using ONLY the 2600 Pac Man sounds (for every arcade game he had) was just a dump on our intellegence.

So is the game short? It lacks replay value from what you're saying. Halo is otherwise one of loads very high replay value games. I can figure the man programmed it for the intellectual fun, nostalgia and novelty of having used ATARI BASIC programming language.
I nearly got into programming, it looks like gibberish- so I'd rather program young minds. I'm now, 86 out of 120 college credits to get my elementary education degree! :. D

Obviously this game takes from Berzerk, it looks like the exact same engine. There's a game called Shamus made by someone who thought it was neat how you could go from room to room in Berzerk but wished there was a point in doing that, and decided to make a copy of Berzerk but with an actual map that you explore, this game seems like an extremely similar idea.

Much like E. T. on the Atari the title screen is by far the best part of the game lol
Still, this one is pretty decent as far as 2600 games are concerned, I just wish he'd included angled shots like Berzerk and points for replay value. With additional angles, a scoring system, and looping the games it could have had a lot of replay value akin to Vanguard.

My favourite curiosity in this vein is -Aperture- for the TI-99/4, which is a port of Valve's -Portal- written in TI BASIC.
Surprisingly it is a challenging set of Portal chambers, with perplexing puzzles and high replay value. A brilliant 2-D homage to one of this generation's great 3-D games.

I literally fell asleep one time while playing Halo (for xbox) and that's never happened to me before. Everything in that game is so mediocre and uninspired. I think I'd have a better time playing the atari version, or I could just play a real FPS, like DOOM.

The music is extremely impressive for a Atari 2600 game. It's a bit disappointing that it seems so limited when it comes to the actual gameplay but it still looks cool especially if you are a fan of the Halo franchise while liking Atari at the same time

It may not be that good but programming the 2600 is a nightmare - an elegant one though - so I-m impressed anytime in the last 20 years that anyone bothered to program a new game for this ancient system, it is not for the weak hearted -.

I think he probably did it as a proof of concept. There-s a lot of programmers who will slag on you because you don-t know COBOL. That said; people who run marathons are the true sadists. Still, passion is passion.

Wait. This has a lot more too it than Bezerk. How can you say there is not much to it and then pull out something with fewer features, no ending and a well lesser game as an example of something better?
