First PC game I bought. I loved it. It was vast and grand which a lot of games for the time were not. I liked the answer questions for your character class it was unique instead of I am just going to pick a fighter. There were sometimes when I wanted to hit my pc with a sledgehammer because of the glitches. I ended up playing it all the way through and beat it with my Drizzt clone. I miss the amount of classes you could pick from arena. the new version i play the online doesn-t have as many choices. After all this time I can watch most tv shows or movies and you will hear the noise the doors make when it opens from the game.

I feel like this review does the series an extreme disservice. Elder Scrolls has been in development for 15-16 years now and is certainly nothing to scoff at. The first game is probably less that you wanted, but it came out in 1994. I think the series is extremely well done and I don't think any other game studio has a longer running coherent game series with the level of depth and detail that Elder Scrolls provides. I like a lot of your other reviews, but definitely not this one.

I think I must've spent a hundred+ hours in this game. Received the CD ROM version as a bonus when I bought Daggerfall at Computer City.
I remember Daggerfall ran too slow and consumed something like 2/3rds the entire storage capacity of my poor IBM PS/1, so I fired up Arena and kept at it for a year or so (along side Ultima VII) until I upgraded. Never did finish Arena. When I fired it up again a few years later I remember it running uncontrollable fast.

Man, it's kind of surreal to think that when you made this review TEN FREAKING YEARS AGO, Skyrim had just come out and Arena was 'only' around 15 years in the past.
Now, it's Oblivion that's about 15 years in the past. Would love a retrospective about that! Also would love it if the next Elder Scrolls game would come out before another decade passes, but who am I kidding.

I must have been one of those few people to play the first disk release. I sunk a lot of hours into this game at the time, but only because I was a bored 13 year old. A buddy of mine also had it and even at the time we would laugh about how bad it was. I am actually really surprised it is considered a cult classic now. The graphics and gameplay seemed dated even in 1994.

As of 2020 both Arena AND Daggerfall are free to download on Bethesda's official site. I have not played yet but I heard they can be quite. Buggy. I'm still going to get them eventually. Seems i am working backwards. Got Skyrim first, then Oblivion. I'm getting Morrowind next, and knowing my pattern now I am getting Daggerfall and Arena in that order. Gotta love it

im playing arena on my tablet with DOSbox (with bluetooth keyboard and mouse) and agree, the controls and UI are clunky at best. i got used to them but they are a chore to use. dungeons are fun but towns are pretty nondescript and the guilds dont seem to have quests! Daggerfall is just better in every way

So little enthusiasm! Normally people get more boring as they age, but with you it's the opposite! You're like a fine wine only getting better with age. How old are you now, anyway, like 35 or something? Your face says 19 and your talk of what you did in childhood says 50!

So much was right with this game that friends and I willingly overlooked its flaws.
Also the sound the used for doors opening is one I can hearing ever since used in all sorts of movies and games, not sure why but for some reason that sound clip is still around.
