It's December! That means Christmas LGR! And the first up is the 16-bit software package known as Simple Simon Says: Christmas for Windows '93 revision 2, from Sygenex Inc and TDA Help!
Date: 2022-04-14

Ohhh yeah. the classic. One of those things that a -load- of us had as kids in the 90s but basically no-one paid for as it had zero copy protection and came on a single floppy, so it was easy for someone to crank out a whole bunch of copies in a lunch break on a school PC. Though I swear it was one of my friends who actually had the original disc with the printed label. In our case, actually Christmas for Windows 2, so probably 1994 not 1993. or maybe 1992? don't think it had the fonts, but it certainly had the wallpapers, MIDI files (still got those around somewhere, not sure about the rest, screensavers, pretend-fairy-light screen decorations, and the rather terrible game-and-watch style games.
Wish that sort of thing was still around for modern computers, but I think we can probably guess why it didn't have great commercial success, as outlined in the first two lines of this comment. Shame, they were one of the few things that actually ever made decent use of the default 16 VGA colours for one thing.
. hmm, having pulled out that 486SX earlier to check the memory speed, I saw that it still has maybe a dozen mb of space left on its rinky dink 160mb HDD. I think I shall have to raid my floppy collection to see if I actually still have a workable copy of this somewhere, and scour the internets for a download if not. It needs to have it installed, if only so I can pull the computer out each Christmas and turn the TV into a non-stop festive cheer station that will drive everyone crazy.

my version of xmas for windows is different, it has more xmas songs like Away in a Manger, Go Tell it on the Mountain, It Came Upon the Midnight Clear, The Wassail Song, etc. and more backgrounds like angels, candy canes, flares, stockings, etc. i got it from Winworldpc. com. I noticed that the winter scene screensaver doesn't work on Windows 95, 98 or ME, it just flickers and does nothing, i tested it both on a virtual machine and a real pc, neither of them work, elf saver and happy new year work just fine.

SimAnt!
What memories. that was a great game and I loved it. I wish there was a reboot of it or something. same idea as me there with the Christmas music except I had the idea of playing Christmas music in the background while playing an FPS online. Slaughtering fellow players to the sound of Christmas music. yeah. it's the gift that keeps on giving. Or. it's one of the gifts atleast heh.
Awesome videos as always here. informative, hilarious and enjoyable to watch.

i have the 1994 version on a disk image backed up onto my flash drive, i use my flash drive to back up old retro stuff on like floppy disk images, old OSes and stuff. Xmas for windows works fine on Windows 95 and Windows 98 but the forest scene and winter village screensavers don't work, they just flicker and not work at all.

SO MANY MEMORIES ARE HAPPENING RIGHT NOW
Our version had a different set of games - still the matching one and Kye (which was awesome) but the third game was one where two elves have to run back and forth between conveyor belts to get the presents to the right locations. Definitely better than Holiday Delivery!

As a child I loved this. I still remember it fondly even though now as an adult I can see it looks rather half hearted in design.
Also really liked Kye, I still probably would play it occasion if I had access to, the Christmas themed version again I saw as a bonus.

I found out the only way to really try these things on modern pcs is to install windows 3. 1 on dosbox or virtual pc. I got it to work on dosbox and was able to have it so everytime I start dosbox it loads windows 3. 1 along with my cd drive.

Where can I find that 8-bit(ish) version of Little Drummer Boy from the beginning of the video? I've come back and watched this video so many times because of it.
Also, did you ever get your hands on that clip art package?

reply

Oh my word, thanks for this! I've been trying to think of the title for ages! I used to love this the whole year through on my first Win95 pc. Just paused the video to comment and now I'm going to sit back and enjoy. :)
