LGR - Terrorpods - Amiga Game Review
video description
The Terrorpod beam is the sound of the guns from -Ark In Space-, and the player weapons are the Gallifreyan stasers from -Deadly Assassin- and the Sontaran guns from -Invasion of Time-. Think I also heard Mr Sin's dragon laser from -Talons of Weng Chiang- in there too.
Yeah, I know just how SAD I am for knowing that!
My excuse is that I used to make Dr Who radio plays. You got to know these damned FX albums far too well after a while!

I used to work in a computer shop in Liverpool (where Psygnosis, and a load of other software houses were based in the 80's ) from 82-89 and a lot of the programmers and graphics artists used to knock around the shop, some of them were very closely linked to the shop, like they used to come for a drink with us after work and come on our Christmas night outs, and as such I may or may not have met Steve Wetherill and Ian Hetherington, I did know ppl who knew and worked with them.

I always hated Psygnosis games. The artwork was always amazing, but the games were unplayable. The controls were usually impossible, often involving point and click where a joystick would have been better (Barbarian. I was often left wondering if anybody had play tested them before they were released, they were that bad. Despite all that - they always looked great (just don't let the box fool you and waste your money on them)

Well from the art is is obvious that the original story was different, as the terropods are portrayed with the cockpits broken and alien tentacles protruding, indicating that some alien life-form took control of the mechs and you try to stop them, instead of the -evil empire wants to taker over mines- story they ended up with. Who knows why they changed it, or even if it was a misunderstanding between artists and developers.

Wow, a Psygnosis game I never heard of? Awesome! Like discovering a bits of the past that you didn't know was there. Game archeology! It is so awesome when you find a piece of art from your favorite artist from the period of time you like it the most. It seems that there is always one more pices of art you missed, always one more tiny bit to discover. and it never ends.

It's weird that American and English are different language options. Americans aren't confused when Captain Picard speaks on TNG, and Brits aren't confused when Captain Jack speaks on Doctor Who, as far as I know. Maybe the two versions are censored in different ways, or the developer put in the option just so 'English' could come before 'American' on the list?

It's not particularly relevant to your review, but I freaking love Jeff Wayne's war of the Worlds album (the original not the next generation. It's incredibly entertaining both on an ironic level because of how absurdly cheesy in a extremely 70's sort of way it is and on it's own merits. I wish more pop music was as evocative and imaginative.

The Amiga version was very difficult; it used keyboard, mouse AND joystick for simultaneous input, so we played it two-player style. It was so difficult that they never seemed to have tested the final battle; when we got to the end, it always spawned a few hundred enemies and then the game slowed down and crashed.

I've always loved yes, gentle giant, and Uriah heep, album covers along with Steve Howes solo stuff. I just thought they were going for the same style since it seemed to me to be the signature prog rock album cover style. Didn't know the same guy did all of them. it's cool to be able to see more of this guys work!

This game was released as part of the -Ten Pack- for new Amigas in 1989. The game was in a small plastic case without instructions. The only thing that kept me coming back for the endless puzzlement and frustration was the cover art. With a cover like that I knew it had to be good. right?
