I have finally finished my no compromise XP complete rebuild that triple boots as a Windows 7 (so I can use my 360 steering wheel with full force feedback like how my Sidewinder FF2 and the games that take advantage of it, was a big incentive for having an XP PC) and windows 10 HTPC as well. Its a 3770K, Corsair H55 AIO, 8GB Kingston DDR3 2400, MSI GTX 980ti, Seagate 500GB SSHD and Samsung 500GB SSD and slim DVD-ROM drive, all plugged in to an ASUS p8z77-i deluxe itx in a Cooler Master Elite 130. For Sound I picked up a Creative USB X-FI 5. 1 Surround, which I got just a few days ago, as ITX means no soundcard and while the onboard audio is more than capable, I wanted full EAX support.
I found my old build spent more time gathering dust than seeing actual use due to the size, meaning I'd try something else rather than lift its heavy bulk to a monitor, with this new version being much more useable outside of just XP, so having a reason to be plugged in to the TV permanently.

LGA775 represents my favorite era in PC gaming. I am happy to report that I am posting this from an LGA775 rig. Not a custom built rig, rather a free throwaway Dell Optiplex 380 slim that had a c2d e7500 and 2gb of ram. I scavenged another 2gb stick from another throwaway and bought a Q8200 for cheap on ebay and threw in an old hard drive and installed a modern flavor of linux and finally have myself a proper LGA775 quad rig. Back in the days this stuff was new I had an AMD 754 single core athlon setup, so it is closure to finally have the platform I lusted after 10-15 years ago.

My XP PC is a SFF Core 2 Duo and an OEM GPU of some kind, probably a HD 5000 series or HD 6000 series card, I think I paid $40 for the whole PC with XP on it. I mostly use it to capture VHS and Hi8 home movies to digital as that old capture device is better than anything available for Win 10. I do like to fire up the OG Far Cry on it from time to time, still a great game.
It sucks because before that I had this nice mid tower Core 2 quad machine with an Intel Extreme MB and XP that I ended up giving away because I didn't think that I'd ever need XP again. Big mistake.

Here I am, having to make room and decide what retro stuff to let go and your video inspired me to keep my over-the-top XP gaming PC, I affectionately call 'MEGAKILL' as a tribute to UT2004 (although renaming to 'HOLYSH--' might be an idea. ASUS Crosshair IV Formula, Phenom II X6 1100T, Radeon HD 8670 (7770 equivalent) 8GB 1600MHz RAM running at 1333 6-6-6-18 1T, X-Fi Titanium Soundblaster. I'll dual-boot with Vista because, why not? (Ok, maybe Win7 as this PC was originally for Win7) Might look at 256GB SSD for dual-boot and 512GB SSD for games to share between the two.

I need help building a quake 2 machine. Of course I will play other games too, but I want to make a build that plays quake 2 as perfectly as possible. I remember installing it on my friends new gaming PC back around 2005 maybe? It ran terribly. Worse than software mode on 98 computer. I was flummoxed at the time as to why a faster better PC would run my beloved q2 WORSE to the point it was unplayable. So my question is, what is the best card or tier of cards that I could plop into an old del optiplex and retro game my heart out?

I too had one of those spin Q coolers and still have it as a matter of fact. my no cost build from that time period was a Core 2 Quad Q6600 planted into an EVGA Nforce 680i board with 2 BFG 8600 OC's in SLI Powered by and Apevia 680w PSU with 4Gbs of GSkill Memory. ( 32 bit XP ) All of this was stuffed into a sleek Antec 900 case. I dont remember what I spent for all of this but It was a Rocker! I later upgraded the 2 GPU's to an 8800 Ultra. Still have the spin Q and the PSU, both are amazing. Every thing else is gone.

Old hardware always triggers some memories, I still own some of it, even a running Pentium III which predates the birth date of one of our team members at work. I'm thinking about gifting him that old machine with a Mistake Edition from MS. but should it be authentic (with just 128MB of RAM) or maxed out at 768MB of RAM. That machine even could start a pre installed Windows 10 (32bit) that way. it is funny to see what -unsupported- hardware still will run with win 10.

Hey, I fully understand playing Crysis on legit software of the time, I mean
if you are playing crysis at 60 fps with no lag, are you really playing Crysis anymore?
No but seriously, without feeling like your computer is about to meltdown from how much the game does, without having to fiddle wiht the settings to try to get a bearable performance, you kind of loose a lil bit that sense of how epic Crysis was at the time, how much it pushed the specs.

i have a win 98 1GB DRAM, a win XP 3. 5GB DDR, and a win 7 8GB DDR2, all set up with a local area network and Red Alert 2 installed on each (all legitimate copies) so i can set up at a convention for people to see the diff between each and help people understand how far tech came in 11 years. as we are now 12 years from win 7 i felt it needed to show what high quality PCs changed.

The chill music was the best part of instslling XP!
This was inspiriational. In liike 10 years, I can revisit building a gaming rig that I wanted to build now to play titles like Cyberpunk2077 which my current system can't handle. Hopefully by then, I can get the components I need for not too much unlike now.
