I actually bought one of these from a -catalog- after placing my order over a landline and then waiting almost two weeks for it to show up. I believe it was like $650 in 87 or 88. Sadly he did not show how the printer clipped to the ass end of it. You could knock out your fresh document on dot matrix thermal paper ready to throw in the copier to have it transformed into a real readable usable paper suitable for presentation before the toxic chemicals in the thermal paper could seep into your skin and cause liver damage. It was loud and slow and thoroughly impressive. Yes it did have a battery built in but no hard drive. when doing word processing when you went to edit you would have to put in different disks to perform functions.
Even living in San Jose at the time I would break this baby out in public places and everyone would walk by staring at this portable pinnacle of technology in awe.

My father worked for IBM for 25 years and we had one of these (as well as most XT-PS/2 models) and omg I loved this one. I had the paralel port addon backpack, I used to remove the screen all the time, and swapped one of it's floppy drives with a hard drive - i loved it's keyboard (I'm weird. I typed a highschool paper on this before I was hand-me-down'd a PS/2 Model 25 (love your vid on that one too)

Thanks for the memories. I had one of these (my first ever laptop) when my boss had finished with it. The rechargeable battery was dud but there was an expansion pack that could take D-cells (I think. There was also a modem (probably another expansion pack. I didn't get a printer with it though. Recently I've been working on a document that I first started on this PC using MS Word 2.

These were so cool. I remember seeing a magazine ad for these way back when I was in grade school. I was amazed by the concept of a PC you could pick up like a tool box and take it with you. The very idea of a proper IBM PC with a built in monitor was.
I'd be interested to see how this machine holds up. Will it overheat like the Apple IIc could (and did?

It amazes me that nobody other than Brother (because they make everything -printing- possible) has made a tiny monochrome dot matrix printer. I imagine it'd be very useful for on-site business printing for lawyers to cary than the big clunky rectangles HP has been selling for years, and cheaper to manufacture to boot.

Never apologize for smelling old hardware. Those who don't get it have never smelled old hardware.
Slightly unrelated but in the same vein; i got an -old- camera this christmas (pre 1920) and the first thing I did was smell it then pass it around so my family members could get a whiff. It was a fine vintage-

I found one at Goodwill several years ago. I could never afford something like this back then. It was only a dream. It has the thermal printer and an external 5 1/4 drive as well. It boots. It works. It-s cool. But totally useless. Nice to have in a collection though.
