I wasn't really around in the '90s (born 1999, but I DID know about this! My cousins had a copy of the physical book, and in my junior high technology class, we had this software. It was the instructor's final semester before retiring, so aside from a few projects, he mostly just let us play on the computers for all of class time. Most of my class mates would play computer games or look at memes (these were the early troll-face memes, but I almost invariably grabbed The Way Things Work and would try to stuff as much as I could into a 50-minute class period. The animations, the unique art style, the simple explanations; everything was so engaging, I probably learned more from this program than if the instructor had actually decided to teach the class!
Also, I have to say I loved the mammoths: )

This is what proper education should be like! Combining good comprehensive knowledge with short colorful animation is the best way for a child to learn about things. It is a real shame more educational games/soft like this is not being produced anymore for modern audiences. Imagine if they had this stuff in schools, it would blow kids' minds.
It also reminds of a great 90s pc game, The Incredible Machine, which was a sort of physics puzzle in which you had to build mouse-trap like machines using many separate parts in order to move an object or solve a puzzle. It was fantastic!

This was one of my favourites books when I was a kid (the spanish version. I still have it on my bookshelf at my parents home. I totally adored the way they presented and explained how things works. Didn't know there was a cd-rom version of it, maybe because back then my only computer was a 386 sx with no multimedia at all. That and the fact we live on a third world country (Argentina) and we didn't have access to all those goodies on the pre-internet era. Love your show, keep bringing good memories please! Greetings from Cordoba, Argentina.

The amount of Nostalgia i get watching this is TOO DAMN HIGH! Thank you for reminding me that this existed! I remember being disappointed that there were few objects starting with the letter F (my initial, just Flare that i can remember, since english is not my native language i could only understand the drawings and diagrams. This was indeed great for that!
When i'm old i will say that younger generations are ruined because as kids they played Fortnite 2040 or whatever appstore game is popular then rather than this

I still have the original book on my shelf, along with several of his other books -- /Castle/, /Cathedral/, /City/, /Mill/, /Pyramid/, and /Underground/. Lots of fond memories there! As for /The Way Things Work/, I read it enough times as a kid that the cover is falling off. And you're absolutely right about Macauley's presentation in it! I never did have the CD-ROM version, but looking at this, I think I might've liked it!
Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane!

I know that Book without ever reading it think, there was a whole cartoon made from it also called -The way things work- in 2003 which interestingly was named -Mammutland - Die Insel der Erfinder- in Germany which would translate in english to -Mammothland - The Island of Inventors-
I never knew that there was a whole book, edutainment software and more behind that cartoon which i liked back then.

I had the book version of this, like a lot of people watching this I'm sure. No idea what happened to my copy though. Yeah, I didn't know about the software side. I didn't really get access to computers until Windows 95 was a thing. I think the first computer I had at home that was a proper computer was Windows 98 based. Yeah, I would really have liked this, or its follow up, ah well.

Clint, if you can get your hands on it please, could you cover Artrageous. It was an edutainment program that introduced me to art and art history and has honestly never left my mind. Ever. I went on to do a degree in Art so you could say it had a bit of an impact. It would be awesome to revisit and amazing if other people played it too, because I don't know anyone who did.

I remember very fondly The Way Things Work 2. 0, which had FMV videos of David Mackaulay explaining various things, like how an electric bell worked and so on. In fact DK Multimedia released a great variety of edutainment products in the 1990s, from My First Amazing World Explorer to my personal favourite, Castle Explorer.

I remember loving encyclopedias on CDs as a kid. I think my family owned two separate electronic encyclopedias. I was surprised how much information they crammed in those CDs. The movies were low quality but there was so much. At the time we only had phone line internet so I appreciated those low quality videos.
