Doom 2: Hell on Earth. Released by id Software and GT Interactive on October 10th, 1994! Looking back at the history of its release, its new monsters, and that fantastically super shotgun

I remember walking into a game's store in Scotland 4 days before the actual proper release date and they were selling Doom II boxes, so I bought it. Went back 2 days later and they had been told to stop selling it and wait for the release day! Naughty naughty! I was on holiday at the time with my girlfriend ( now my wife of 30 years! ) and all I had with me was my Toshiba mono screen laptop for playing, a 1990's LCD mono laptop is a terrible gaming platform! LOL! So my one claim to fame is I got to play Doom II in the UK 4 days before most people! ha ha!

When I played Doom II as a kid back then (in 1994 I was 14) I had a brand new 486DX2-66MHz which was a quite good computer at that time. But I remember that this machine was still too slow for some Doom 2 levels when there was a lot of action going on. I was never able to finish the final level because it was just a dia show when tons of monsters appeared. It was just ahead of its time. Also the bad controls were a problem for me back then. Nowadays with new engines this game is still great but with a much better playability.

I'm sure Sandy Petersen has come to terms with the fact that he made some of the worst and most widely despised maps in the whole game. Meanwhile the most memetic maps like Gantlet, Crusher, and Dead Simple were from American McGee. John Romero did Circle of Death and Industrial Zone which are probably some of the most brutal maps in the game (Industrial Zone being my personal favorite) and Tom Hall can claim the title for making the best map in Refueling Base. I don't give Petersen credit for cleaning up and finishing it.

I loved this game as a Kid but the Computer was in the room of my 7 year older brother and he did not let me play a lot. one day he offered me to play anytime for as long as I want if I would find out his password. after hours of trying I got it because it was just -password- - but he did not stand by his word and only let me play it for some hours that day and on other days only when he wasnt there. Scumbag XD

Just wanna say real quick, Doom II with Brutal Doom mod, and -Maps of Chaos- mod. Just like original Doom II levels but with added rooms and demons in places you don't expect. Amazingly fun but on Realism difficulty you can die from two or three well-placed shots but they can be dodged. Very fun and I'm sure other people have already done this but I didn't see a comment talking about it so here it is lol

I always go for the shotgun in map 1. But it was only recently that I actually thought about how pointless it is to go for it. You get your first shotgun 10 seconds into Map 2. The early shot gun only helps you with 5 zombiemen and 1 shotgunner, assuming you cleared the imps from map 1. And even then, 30 seconds after that you get the super shotgun, which makes the normal shotgun almost irrelevant.

Just so you fellow retro gaming nerds are aware, Doom Eternal comes with the wads for both Doom and Doom II, they're located in -INSTALL DIRECTORY-\base\classicwads
You can load them up in any source port like GZDoom. So, if you don't already have the wads on a media server and don't feel like grabbing them off the internet, but have Doom eternal installed. there you go.

This is not how you deal with Archviles, kids: )
But yeah, some of the levels are a chore, and don't hold up well at all. In fact they never did hold up, I remember hating some of them back when I first played this to death on my PS1.
Man me and my flatmate played link-up obsessively back then. I think he even managed to frag me once; )
Classic

If I could change one thing about Doom II: The Arachnotron enemies should-ve given you a small energy cell ammo after you killed them, and the Revenants should-ve given up one rocket each.
They used ammunition similar to your own weapons - but unlike the zombie enemies, they didn-t help to refill your ammo after an encounter. It was unfair!

3: 42 on the manual: -When you're comfortable playing the game, try using the keyboard and the mouse simultaneously. The mouse provides fine aiming for your weapon while the keyboard permits you to activate the many useful functions of the game-
Keyboard+Mouse advocated by Id Software as early as 1994.
