It’s definitely controversial. Using the image of an actor who is now passed away is morally dubious. Ian Holm is dead so we’ve no way of knowing if he would have agreed to be in the movie, or would have given permission for his image to be used in this way. Maybe he would have read the script and thought, no, I want nothing to do with this. Nevertheless, he’s in the movie now, whether he would have wanted to be or not. In a world of deep fakes and continued developments in AI, I think this issue of image rights is going to become more prevalent. Personally, I would have preferred if they just used a new actor rather than constantly having to harken back to old characters. Let the movie stand on its own two feet rather than rely on endless call backs.

Ian Holm deepfake definitely was a trip into the uncanny valley, but I don't think it was a mistake to include an android based on Ash in this story, nor is a fan service. It fits logically. The problem I have is the execution. I agree that they should have used practical effects.

I have no idea how anyone can say the CG looked remotely passable! It was atrocious. Loved the movie, but this was really bad. Just cast a different actor. There was no reason to do this. Great movie, but the CG face swap gag should go the way of 3D films.
reply

Yeah that CG character looked horrible. They should’ve gone with a heavily damaged practical animatronic effect like they did with Bishop’s android in alien 3. It’s too bad because other than that, all the other special effects were absolutely gorgeous.

Romulus was terrible. It actually started off well on the Jackson's Star Colony and i wanted to see more of that world but as soon as it became a Best of Alien movies, it went downhill very fast. People who like this movie have taste in cinema.

What I don't understand is why didn't they do a puppet/animatronic for Rook.
It would've looked a ton better and it's not like there was anything the character did that was dynamic enough to absolutely necessitate CGI or a deepfake

So disappointing to watch them go to such lengths to use practical effects only to throw it all out of the window with a terrible CGI Rook and the shockingly bad engineer alien hybrid that looks like it came out of the The Thing reboot
reply

You need to get your fact right cause literally the director contacted the family and they gave the ok for them to use his likeness so it's not controversial at all and it not the same character it a different character

Alien Romulus is an instant classic, for once, face huggers get blasted by a pulse rifle when it is attempting to face hug Rain and the android gets to help humans really well (when they are on your side only)

They could have had a practical effect like a mask of that actor but all munted from the alien so we see more internal parts of the head than anything. The voice sounded ok. I loved the movie by the way
reply

I agree. The film was great but the uncanny valley was hooooorrrrible for Rook. Every scene he was in was bad. Anything would have been better than what they dideven a bad actor would have been better.
reply

Will no one talk about the android alien, probably based on Norbert seen it today. loved the movie. gave me some scares. will def need to go see it again to enjoy all the easter eggs
reply

I really didn't think there was anything wrong with it. Yes the CGI wasn't great but i understand what they were trying to do. I wouldve loved it to be Fassbender though
reply

I liked his inclusion tbh. I recently watched the original Alien and was so glad i did. It was a connection to the lore and i appreciate that.
reply

What controversy I mean sure there were a few scenes where you could tell the face was a little cgi but not in a bad or controversial way
reply

Rook's CGI is horrible. It completely ruined the immersion for me. I still enjoyed it, though. A must watch for fans of the franchise.
