One wonders what role basically being cast as DARTH VADER as a little kid played in triggering his schizophrenia. I think it would have been triggered anyways, but that's a hell of a thing to lay on a little kid.
In the 70s Hollywood decided to make this major motion picture for everybody called THE OMEN where they went:
Let's take a tiny little unknown kid actor and just MAKE HIM SATAN for everybody and then the little kid will just have to grow up WATCHING HIMSELF BE SATAN for the rest of his life.
Never heard from THAT actor again, didja

The mom is right - getting schizophrenia had nothing to do with the bullying after his appearance in Star Wars - there is a strong genetic component. My high school girlfriend developed schizophrenia a few years after we broke up, and I certainly had nothing to do with that (being Irish Catholic probably had more to do with it. All his later problems had to do with his mental instability, not the notoriety of having been in Star Wars.

I had no idea that he and the Jar Jar actor got so much hate for their roles back then. Pretty much everyone in my gen like the movies and the main criticism was adult Anakins occasionally cheesy acting. Gen X and Boomers really are hateful sociopaths who cling to the past so much they literally drive people to unalive themselvex

George Lucas choose him from 1000's of candidates for a reason. My family loved his character and how he portrayed him. We wish him well and are grateful for his performance. I just watched the Episode I again and it still grows on me. One of the greatest stories and so inspiring to my kids and me. Love and encouragement to Jake.

Way back when in high school in the SF Bay Area, one off the underclassmen had a role in THX-1138, the young guy in the court scene, that required him to shave his head. He wore a stocking cap until his hair grew out, back then, unlike today, nobody shaved their head.

That's so sad to hear he's gone through so much. I remember when this came out, I was about the age he was in the movie and I loved it! I still think he did great! I really hope he is able to manage the schizophrenia as that is a rough condition.

Even if Jake Lloyd wasn’t bullied by Star Wars fans, the fact that it’s so believable is a testament to how horrible Star Wars fans can be towards the cast and crew, all because they made something the fans didn’t like.

I will continue to defend Jake Lloyd and Phantom Menace! I honestly really love Phantom Menace, regardless of its issues. It was still a fun and entertaining film and Jake Lloyd was great as a lil Anakin!

That's crazy he's only two years younger than me. I remember seeing The Phantom Menace in theaters as a kid and thinking he was way younger than me.
