The problem I have with this is the assumption that the reason the actors haven't gone on to bigger things is due to their association with the character they played. Yet if look at most actors that have a lead role in popular shows they too have problems getting better roles after leaving their show. I don't think it's the association with a character that is the problem for most of them. It's just that it's a highly competitive field with a hell of a lot of people trying out for those plum roles so it's tough for even people that have proven popular with the public to get that next big role. Some manage it but most don't. They keep working but never quite hit the lottery.

I just find it odd they not only added Star Trek TNG to the list but listed 3 actors who have gone on to do very well after the series/movies ended.
Frakes, Burton, and Spiner failed to embark on major careers post-Trek. They've hardly failed!
While none of them have had a character like Xavier, the iconic characters they played haven't stifled them. They each have had consistent work (tv, movie, and voice work) and expanded their acting careers into directing over the past 20+ years!

I just find it odd they not only added Star Trek TNG to the list but listed 3 actors who have gone on to do very well after the series/movies ended.

You know what. Each and every single one of these stars made it. They made it. All have now had successful careers in Hollywood. And all are obscenely, disgustingly rich! Some to the point that they could buy their own production studio the way any of us could buy a cup of coffee. And I don't mean one from Starbucks. But yeah, buy a studio, make films, put themselves in those films. Why haven't they done that? Simple. They're busy spending that money, enjoying that ridiculously EASY life. So don't even waste your time feeling sorry for them.

I agree Lauren Ambrose is such a talented Actress. I loved her in Six Feet Under. I hope casting crew and agencies eventually see this and give her the chance she deserves. Dexter has proved that people don't always see actors as one dimensional characters. I would love to see Lauren in a role that is completely different from her character in Six Feet Under, I think she would fit really well in something like Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead.

I would add 2 names from classic television - Bob Denver's career was killed after playing Gilligan on Gilligan's Island. Even though he was immensely popular for doing Maynard Krebbs on Dobie Gillis, he couldn't escape Gilligan type roles. Even more typecast was Max Baer, Jr, who played Jethro on The Beverly Hillbillies. He said Jethro typecast his so bad his career in films and tv was dead.

I think a lot of these actors basically hit the jackpot; long-running shows that will live for decades in syndication plus however internet royalties work. Star Trek, Buffy, Friends, all of them never really have to work again and a lot of them just do work that interests them. Like Lavar Burton on Reading Rainbow. Or how Jonathan Frakes is more of a director now than an actor.

Desi Arnaz - nothing after Lucy, altho he tried to float the character of a doctor-detective. Just about anyone who starred in Wagon Train, including the kid. Numerous stars of SNL - seen Garrett Morris lately?

HUGE misstep in regards to Jonathan Frakes. He has been VERY successful since the end of ST: TNG, just not as an actor. You really should have checked his credits on IMDb. He's become a very sought-after director.
As for Jason Alexander, he has a new show coming up, Hit the road. Planned to premiere on October 17. We'll have to wait and see how well that one does.

Lauren Ambrose is now starring in the current production of My Fair Lady at Lincoln Center as Eliza Doolittle. She just won an Outer Critics Circle Award for the role and is nominated for a Tony Award. Nobody knew she could sing the score, and people thought the casting was strange but she really has a legitimate operatic soprano.
