The Absolute Best One-Season TV Shows Ever dadoctah: As great as Brisco County was, it lasted longer than it should have. They polished off the great underpinning mystery introduced in the pilot just halfway through the single season, and everything after that point was just the writers and actors sticking around waiting for the ax to drop.
Now if you want a quirky single-season western not afraid to poke fun at itself and with enough loose ends to carry it forward into subsequent seasons that never came to pass, I suggest UPN's Legend, starring Richard Dean Anderson and John DeLancie. It was cancelled for two reasons, neither of them having to do with the show's actual quality: (1) UPN felt the need to cancel every show on their first season's schedule with the lone exception of Star Trek: Voyager, and (2) a sweeping fire at Old Tucson studios pretty much destroyed all the sets and resources they'd gotten used to using.

Cowboy Bebop.
Unlike some of these other shows it wasn't canceled after one season. It was only supposed to run for a single season. The producers begged for more, but the creators said the story is over. What remained was a single season of storytelling that ended up being beautifully balanced with a well-developed character driven story.
I don't really consider myself a fan of Japanese anime. If you don't either you should watch Cowboy Bebop from beginning to end. Its sensical where many of its counterparts are outlandish. It's truly one of the best series that I've ever seen.

1. Clone High? Never heard of it.
2. My So-Called Life? I got the impression that this was a Whine Fest and stayed away.
3. Firefly was done in by Teen Age Mutant TV Programmers at Fox TV.
4. The Tick? Now that was a time bomb.
5. The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. lost the Alien Villain. and that was that.
6. The Get Down? Never heard of it.
7. Freaks and Geeks? I graduated from high school a long time ago. and wasn't about to return.

When do you think these networks will ever get that they need to stop with this butchering of shows by placing them on Friday nights big competitor nights with big hit shows that they know they can't compete with or messing with the order of these episodes of shows it's like they're setting all these shows up just to straight up fail for no reason other than they're mad that they even thought of airing them on their network let alone paid for them

When I was a kid, there was a show called Frank's Place starring Tim Reid. It was a smart, intelligent show that the critics loved and the public didn't understand. It wasn't quite a comedy and it wasn't quite a drama, so no one watched it. It's never been aired since, at least not in my area, which is too bad because it also made you think. It lasted one season and I still think it was a mistake to cancel it.

I want to give a nod to The Unusuals. It was a very hip cop ensemble series. It featured Amber Tamblyn and a still unknown Jeremy Renner who I think earned his reputation on this film and became a star. Also Harold Perrineau of LOST Fame. Very quirky and funny but with great real relationship scenes. And also one of the best instrumental themes since Hawaii 5-0.

Oh man. Testees was such a great one season show. It really should have gotten a second season but it felt like the director, writers and cast knew it wasn't going to go beyond a first season and ended up having a lot of fun with it toward the end. Some crazy out there stuff happens toward the end. Definitely should be on the list.

Dark Angel (2000-2001, w/Jessica Alba) went two seasons, but season one was great, and deserved better than the horrid second season that probably helped get it canceled. Plus, I think it was also canceled/ruined after season one in-part due to behind-the-scenes creative issues & legalities. Original Cindy + x5452 (Max) = WIN!

Back before time began there was a British sci-fi tv series called Star Cops. I even learnt how to program my VCR (yes, video tape) to record episodes. They spent all that time developing the characters and then pull the pin. I see it is still here The Tube, but it probably seem soooo out of date.

Anybody else remember space: above and beyond? Written by two writers of the X files it was a dark and complicated look at the trauma of war, segregation, racism and one man's belief in his missing girlfriend, with plenty of ptsd thrown in.
Just set in space during an alien conflict.
