Why Hellboy Was Doomed From The Start
video description
Sure it takes some plot lines directly from the comics. it's also massively changes them, swaps around characters, omits characters, changes motivations, character development, and fused unconnected stories together
Hell, it doesn't even get Hellboy's basic nature right (and neither did the first 2(
Humans generally love Hellboy. He's a guy guy. He's everyones buddy. He has no desire to turn on humanity cause humanity treats him well. Aside from rare instances where some Human wants to kill him based on a prophecy or that rare super religous guy, Hellboy is basically a celebrity. He's world famouse. Hell, one comic literally has Hellboy being treated better than a black guy, and Hellboy even asks him about it. Black guy is pissed that Hellboy gets treated better than him and he's not even human. Hellboy has honorary human status.

Hellboy was great! Once you get over the fact that it's not Del Torro and Pearlman. it's actually a really good comic book adaptation. There were a lot of nods to the comics, like the cheesy B. P. R. D. logo. The movie was almost a nonstop action movie. I was a little put off in the beginning, because it was different than the originals but once it got in a groove it was a lot of fun. The CGI was a little cheesy in some parts but I think that was because that's what the tone of the movie was in that part. In the more serious parts, (like the end) the CGI was actually really good. I would see more movies like this, especially if they bring in more of the B. P. R. D.

You know what's funny? Lionsgate (the distributor for Hellboy) were also responsible for the distribution of the 2012 movie Dredd, which was a reboot based on the Judge Dredd comics.
However, the differences between Dredd & Hellboy is that one recieved better reviews than the original film, only to bomb at the box office & gain new life with a cult following in home media. The other is an unnecessary reboot that was made instead of a proper third film & had none of the original crew from the first two films, resulting in terrible reviews & a low performance at the box office.

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU LIE TO PEOPLE FROM THE BEGINNING, critics think they know the characters enough to criticise ( based on the previous incarnation of the live action character, who is not to similar to his comic counterpart ) but that was the closest thing we're ever gonna get to the comic book hell boy, modern ' superhero ' tropes are kind of needed these days just to please a new fan base, its also pretty impossible to adapt the comic anyway due to years of writing and context movies just cant really put in

This movie was definitely a product of too many cooks in the kitchen. There were flashes of brilliance where you could see how good the movie could have been if it had a cohesive unified darker vision. Whoever developed the soundtrack needs to be shot, and the humor was so bad that it was literally cringe inducing. The fact that they didnt go the route with Guillermo Del Toro and Ron Perlman really pissed off a lot of people to begin with, this will be started off with a chip on its shoulder that it never shook off.

What went wrong? Idiotic expectations from people not having even read the comics or who might have given a look at the source material. I do not understand why movies should always cater to the braindead lowest denominator who wants nothing complicated or challenging to watch. If seeing only the ordinary run of the mill superhero movies is what one considers as the only viable and enjoyable approach to films then this movie nor any other that breaks that mould is for you. Get bent. Yours truly.

It has a good cast but god theres so many issues. Im a die hard hellboy fan and loved seeing comics stuff, but how characters were and the constant violence and gore and cursing just sullied it. Hellboy is a comic thats violent when it needs to be, the writing is also held high for its clever moments and articulate villains. My other issue is that they chose a story line that takes place after so many years of prep and backstory and was where hellboy died.

The movie honestly was not that bad. I am a critic at times but honestly, what happened to just watching things how they are. The movie was funny, gory, and action packed. People keep going into these movies these days with high expectations instead of just going to tje movies. Everyone wants critisize everything and do not even know what goes into making films. And trust me there are movies way worse than this.

I think it didn't do to well was because everyone liked the deltoro HB movies and preferred that before this movie even came out.
Yes the movie is flawed however I don't put full blame on the crew for they had really big shoes to fill. That and many things were already established in the deltoro movie so trying to bring in something new wasn't easy. Plus infight didn't help either.

One of the worst ideals for it was they used the Wild Hunt and The Storm and Fury stories, which are the climax of the entire Hellboy stories before Hellboy in Hell. It'd been a good idea for Del Toro's 3rd movie, but it's shit for a reboot introduction. They also crammed it with too many references that were irrelevant to the story.
