Sebastian Stan Reveals Why Bucky Didnt Get The Shield In Endgame BobBIZARRE: I'm so confused. When Sam says Like it belongs to someone else. Did he mean that he felt that it was supposed to go to Bucky. like many of us had assumed? Or did he mean that no one could take Steve's place as The Cap. and that it would always belong to him?
For the longest time it felt to me like it was the latter of the two. but now. after this. I see the other side. he didn't want to be a stand in until Bucky was ready. just a seat filler for the Winter Soldier. He wanted to know that it was his. He needed to hear it said. He needed to know that he was now Captain America. I think I am starting to better understand this exchange. and it really is sort of a beautiful wrap up to an amazing story arc between Sam And Steve.
Thanks Looper. this helped change my opinion of that scene. and it's gonna help me look harder at both iterations of these two iconic charactors.

But Bucky DID say goodbye. When they are talking just before Cap leaves, Bucky echoes the exact same line that Cap says to him when he goes off to war in The First Avenger. Don't get into any trouble till I get back. how can I? Your taking all the trouble with you. To me, that subtle call-back was Bucky's way of saying he KNEW Cap wasn't coming back and he understood why. That's also why he didn't go to greet his old friend when he and Sam see Steve as the old man sitting by the pond. He had already said his goodbye to Cap. This was Sam's time to say goodbye. That's also why he gives that silent nod of approval when Cap gives his shield to Sam. As you say, Steve wanted a normal, happy life with Peggy, but he wanted that for Bucky as well. Bucky deserved to NOT have that mantle of responsibility, but both Cap and Bucky knew that Sam would be worthy of the shield.

I really hate the whole the name must go on thing in comics. It seems to exist solely so they can take a character away, to replace them with a less liked character, only to eventually bring back the original to drive sales. Captain America is Steve Rogers, Iron Man is Tony Stark, Superman is Clark Kent, Batman is Bruce Wayne. If you want an inheritor of those character's ideas fine but make an original character that holds up on their own. They can't because they can't write, nor take risks, nor take the time necessary for character building.
Also Falcon was always in the forgettable Avenger category. He didn't even need to be in the movies.

Everyone is getting the reason wrong because no one really knows why. Some people say its because buckys tired of fighting. Yet he and Sam are gonna be fighting in falcon and the winter soldier. Some say its because buckys a damaged person. What better way to be less damanged then being worthy for something you didnt believe you were worthy of?
Sam got the shield. But Bucky could have gotten it. And people would be debating why Sam didnt get it. They are both worthy. And it was shitty of Steve to not give it to both or neither of them.

I really dont understand why Bucky didnt get Caps shield I mean he has the same strength pretty much as Cap hes fast he fights great falcon doesnt all he can really do is fly but with the wings. Im so confused I know Bucky cant be corrupted but they can fix that I guess. I still say Bucky was better I mean I like sam but with out those wings he really cant do much.

One of my biggest hates of Endgame was Sam getting that shield over Bucky. I just dont like Sam, however. BUT, I do feel that Bucky has had so much put upon him throughout his life and shouldnt be expected to have to live yet another lifetime of heavy responsibilities. He deserves happinessbut I doubt he will get a lot of that. Hes very different than most men.

Sam was Steves choice because hes a good man, a capable man, and the man who had been fighting by his side, risking his non-serum having life and limb, since the day they met. It didnt have shit to do with whether or not Bucky could handle it imo. I cant wait for the show to make it even more clear than it already is.

Part of it is also because in Captain America: The First Avenger, the guy who created the syrum(I forget his name) says to Steve Rodgers, Not a perfect soldier, but a good man. That really struck a heart chord with me. And while Bucky is a perfect soldier, Sam is a good man.

Cmon Sam is the perfect guy to take over! Hes inspired by captain America whereas Bucky is inspired by his friend Steve Rogers. Sam is gonna be great With the shield I cant wait to see him use it!

They just wanted Falcon because he's black. I do feel it's a little forced, but given how much Hollywood lacks racial diversity in casting (full white Oscar nominations again, this is not that much of a problem.
