Firefly Fans Could Be Getting Great News Soon

It's been, gosh, almost two whole decades since Firefly went off the air, and the show's fans have been peppered with false hope at least once a year ever since. Rumors of reunion specials, Serenity sequels, and Netflix reboots have made the rounds like so many signals you can't stop. Nathan Fillion cosplayed as Captain Reynolds on Castle, which devotees saw as a sure sign that the crew would keep flying soon enough. An MMO was announced in 2013, complete with voice work from the original cast, but it disappeared without so much as a sorry we got you all worked up from the development team. It is, therefore, with some degree of caution that the following update is relayed: Word is making the rounds that Disney is working on a Firefly reboot, intended for release on its Disney+ streaming service. That update comes courtesy of Giant Freakin Robot, and while a reminder to do like The Who taught you and not get fooled again might come as a given, the rumor appears to have legs. It's all thanks to the continuing downturn in the financial viability of theatrical releases, and a company-wide shift towards more televised content. Firefly, which joined the Disney vault as part of the company's 2019 acquisition of all Fox entertainment properties, is seen as a viable universe to explore given the studio's direct-to-consumer emphasis.

So its about a family who go on the run when the Alliance comes after them for reasons unrevealed.
The father is a former military officer who left his worlds service after they capitulated to the Alliance in betrayal of their people.
His wife is a freighter pilot who managed to earn enough to build a home on a remote inhabitable moon where her husband and her raised their two kids until one day a former friend of her husband leads a raiding party onto their home forcing them to flee.
Having to return to her former business carrying freight and passengers they end up recruiting a couple of extra crew to maintain the ship as they keep on moving away from Alliance space as hijinx insues with every world they visit until secrets of the past spill out onto the surface leading eventually to a frightening reveal that explains the Alliance's interest in them and a new enemy that poses a threat to everybody!
That kind of thing?

I just don't get it - I love Whedon as I think Buffy is the best TV show of all time (seasons 2-4. But I just don't get Firefly. I can't stand Fillon as a lead, thought the writing sucked ( what in the sphincter or hell are you playin' at - seriously, that's good dialogue? The movie was okay but it was clear to me from the beginning that it wasn't going to make it as, well, it just wasn't good. Oh, and total sci-fi diehear here, I'm sure we agree on basically every other property and my friends think I'm nuts - but I just don't get it and never did.

Hello Disney:
I hope with all my heart that you will become one of the most hated brands in the world and that you will have to sell yourself to bums like the whre you are.
You make everything pg13 and we fcking hate you for it.
Every fan of yours as a child feels like you abused them sxulaly because they are so easily and lazily impressed. luckily we all grow up to see you for the gross old lard fungus sprouting candyman you are.

The original cast is too old, so it'll be a new cast and it will work as well as Ghostbusters. Why not just call it something else? I am so over seeing movies, shows COMPLETELY different from the original but still retain the name. #1 of all time, Starbuck. Yeah, her character was great, but why not call her something else? The wheel doesn't always have to be re-invented. Call it a rim.

I'd rather it died completely than become Disneyfied. Firefly needs the moral ambiguity and dark storylines if it is to return. It is part of what made it so great. The good guys did what they needed to do to survive and it wasn't always a morally good choice. Disney rarely deals with moral ambiguity well so should probably stay clear of the franchise.

They already killed off major characters
Disney should have learned by now that the key to a successful reboot is fan service. Without the original cast (and the dead characters) how would they expect this to work? Are they lonely and desperate for the attention of enraged hardcore fans review bombing them?
Asking for a friend.

So they have an opportunity to build on an already working platform, and. kill it.
Sounds like another Battlestar Galactica forecast.
If you aren't going to bring back original cast & rugged boarderlands concept then simply create a show about another crew in the Firefly universe.
Don't re-make Jaws, featuring a marlin!

You don't reboot source material that was already loved. If you can't bring back the original cast for anything other than the occasional cameo then you tell another story within the existing canon with new characters. Why must these professional showrunners repeatedly need to be taught the basics of their own damn job.

Disney will muck it all up. I hope they don't make it. I want to remember Firefly and the film Serenity as the Sci Fi perfection that it is. I don't begrudge Joss Whedon wanting to continue the Firefly legacy. If it were 100% Joss' call I'd be all in. But, Disney? Give it a rest! Adventure on, Phat

I'm not holding my breath. and they would have to have at least some of the original cast involved, to have a prayer of keeping any of the original fans. and as far as being less gritty. well we'll see how that goes too. I feel much of the original flavor would be lost when they make it PG maybe.
