none of these movies are perfect. they are all time greats for sure but having the only perfect scores on Metacritic does not necessarily equate to best movies ever
There are several reasons that older films tend to have higher ranks on Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes than equally good contemporary films. I think nostalgia plays a part for sure. Older films that are reviewed by modern critics are critiqued with much less venom than newer movies, at least I think so. These are films they have seen their entire lives; they hold a special place in their hearts
Many of the great movies coming out today will no doubt have their scores increase over time

Start The Revolution Without Me (from Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors, it is hilarious. Gene Wilder & Donald Sutherland are sublime. And, I must include a comedy)
Disney's animated Beauty and The Beast -- it is truly an Opera.

I have seen Citizen Kane -- I do not think it is the best film ever.
In fact, I consider it quite average.
It is too self conscious. The camera angles and tricks are too evident. They do not get lost in the story -- they stand apart from the story.
Hence, they are NOT at the top of their craft.

I'll share my unpopular opinions: Boyhood was just a gimmick and otherwise is at best an average film; Goodfellas and The Departed are better crime movies than The Godfather, Casablanca is a good movie, but it is not even close to being the best movie of all time; Unforgiven should be on this list.

Metacritic must be a bunch of old white guys running the show with these outdated, overrated choice of movies.
Do the Right Thing, Boyz in da Hood, City of God and countless other movies would and should be considered perfect. Well that is if the people choosing were a diverse group.

Never seen any of these, I could say none of them are perfect. I watch a lot of movies but I really never felt like watching any of these, they don't seem interesting, just slow. I would say a perfect movie would be The Shawshank Redemption and/or Gladiator.

Doh, Narrator! The Godfather was set starting in 1945 near the end of World War II, NOT in 1940, which was before the US entered the war. Else, Michael would not have been returning from his service in that war as a minor military hero.

Casablanca greatest movie EVER! Godfather, Rear Window, Citizen Kane are perfect too. Vertigo is wonderful - not perfect. Notorious is wonderful too-but not perfect. Boyhood/Red are waaay over-rated. The Great Lebowski should be on this list

I was surprised that Lawrence of Arabia and Chariots of Fire didn't make the list. and no musicals at all! Surely West Side Story and Singing in the Rain and The Wizard of Oz belong, too!
