The Real Reason These Animated Disney Movies Bombed

Nowadays, animated Disney movies are a surefire recipe for box office success. Unfortunately, in the past, even Disney has put out a few commercial duds. Here's the real reason why these animated Disney movies bombed at the box office. Fantasia was the passion project of Walt Disney himself. In fact, he was so in awe of the 1940 musical that he once said: Fantasia is timeless. It may run 10, 20 or 30 years. It may run after I'm gone. Fantasia is an idea in itself. I can never build another Fantasia. I can improve. I can elaborate. That's all. Sadly, Walt's passion failed to translate into initial massive box office returns. The film's first screenings at a roadshow engagement didn't turn a profit thanks to the expensive costs of setting up the sound system known as Fantasound, which was intended for use in theaters showing Fantasia. Those costs meant that Fantasia was always going to struggle to turn a profit. On top of that, the avant-garde nature of the feature initially turned off general moviegoers and even some critics. In the end, Fantasia lost Disney the modern equivalent of more than 15 million and nearly drove the company into bankruptcy. While Fantasia initially proved to be too costly and unusual to be successful right away, the film would find itself profitable decades later. A 1969 theatrical re-release saw Fantasia finally turning a profit, while a subsequent re-release in 1990 took in 25 million. So, despite bombing in its first theatrical run, Fantasia did indeed live up to Walt Disney's hopes of running long after he was gone.

I appreciate the nostalgia of hand drawing animation. Especially when it's as sharp as CGI. I feel like it gives more love and heart. Not saying that CGI doesn't and is less. But there's nothing like putting you all into a project and it comes out wonderfully. Just my opinions. Also on another note Disney normally gauges younger audience. Whereas DreamWorks is more adult themed. Even better, I appreciate some Disney songs but I get tired of hearing a song every 5 minutes versus a story.

Hercules failed because, Like Pocahontas, It was not accurate to the source material. Pocahontas was historically inaccurate and Hercules was mythologically inaccurate. It's like Armageddon. A movie that should be shown to people if you want them to know how to do things wrong.

I know another reason The Black Cauldron bombed: Follow That Bird.
My mom took me to the theater to see Follow That Bird, and all showings were sold out. A bus of kids showed up, and left after hearing that. We settled for Black Cauldron to not waste a trip.

Imagine if Disney had gone bankrupt? What a heavenly world this would be? No Marvel, no media and movie over throw from them, we might even get (heaven forbid) more variety from more studios at the cinema, the cinema was well on its way out before Disney hijacked it all

maybe it's bc i personally always had an instant fascination with Greek gods and goddesses that i LOVED Hercules from the gate, but TBH, i had no idea it was considered a fail. this is brand new information

Sure Hercules flopped at the box office, but look at how big of a cult following it has become. Disney is now putting the Hercules characters in video games like the Kingdom Hearts franchise and Disney Magic Kingdoms.

It s interesting that you say these movies were flops when a lot are my favorites and I watch over and over again. Fantasia 1, 2; Hercules, Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Pooh and so on.

People: When this video says bombed, they don't mean critical bomb, they mean BOX OFFICE bomb. Saying you liked the movie when it came out doesn't make it less so.
