How did Martin Luther King Jr. completely change Uhura's future on Star Trek? Watch now to find out this, and so much more, about the classic sci-fi character made famous by Nichelle Nichols. Nickolas: She is a great member of the Star Trek franchise. like Sulu and Checkoff, she was support staff. She played the role as the role was meant to be played, and was part of something that went beyond her role. Growing up, it never dawned on me that she was black. I didn't care, and neither did the people I hung out with. It wasn't until I got into college that the whole black/white thing was important. and that dichotomy was pushed by black people.

58 year old white dude. When this show came out, i have to admit i liked watching the prettiest girls: the two prettiest girls were Uhura and the blond yeoman. Don t even remember her screen name, let alone her real name. Remember both for Nichelle Nichols so i guess that means she was most memorable to me. She was a classy-looking, gorgeous girl and it looks like she aged magnificently. Only have good memories of her. I guess i was just too young to understand racism and thank God my parents never taught me to judge people by their skin (though i DID like the prettiest girls more! Sad that she passed away. Glad i got to enjoy her beauty.

Yes we used to have a proper name for kind of position, I believe it was called secretary later changed to receptionist and a lot successful individuals have someone of that nature called a personal assistant

Glad to know that Looper also mentioned The Lorelei Signal as one of Uhura's shining moments and I agree that she was so underused. Good tribute.

As I understand it, astronaut Dr. Mae C. Jemison was influenced by Nichelle's performance as Star Trek's Nyota Uhura also! BRAVO!
