I just finished watching Ep 2 of House of the Dragon a second time. Is Viserys dumber than rocks? He got a second opinion from Ser Lyonel Strong privately. He pushed for Laena. Viserys still didn't listen! I have nothing against Viserys, btw. Just his actions. Love Paddy's performance. Otto Middlefinger Hightower is the real scum and I love Rhys Ifans' performance too.
Yeah, we know Laena is only 12. But what was Lyonel's response? She'll mature. Is Laena planning to stay 12-years-old forever? Have some forward thinking. Have some foresight. And marriages back then were mostly business transactions. Love wasn't required. It's too create stronger partnerships. Stronger alliances. So when a war happens, they're forged as allies.
Viserys rejected the richest House in all of the realm. Unreal from The Weak King who rejects his favorite cousin's eldest daughter all because she's 12 and Alicent got his little statue fixed and has been chatting with him for 6 months? Father and best friend backstabbed Rhaenyra and her mother has only been dead for half a year.
Damn you, Viserys! You screwed up. Name Rhaenyra as your heir. Then forget about it because all it did was to banish Daemon. Then be pressured to remarry. Then pick the wrong girl. He should've picked the 12-year-old! Oh, well. She'll grow up, ride the largest she-dragon ever, and marry someone more Chad than Viserys ever was.
If Viserys isn't dumb, he just made the dumbest decision he's ever made by picking Alicent as his next queen. But I guess we need characters like him to make mistakes to serve a story. If no mistakes, no story. No leading to any conflicts. Otto is brilliant though. And I can understand him being the most hated. He knew Rhaenyra would be easier to overtake than his uncle since nobody is taking women seriously at that time.
The one advantage with Viserys picking Alicent is he does not have to wait too long for a son and perhaps he's realizing he has little time left. Figured he can't wait on Laena to mature. If that's the case, then maybe picking Alicent sounds a little more justifiable. She gave him a son only a year after the wedding. But that's also what ignites the Dance of the Dragons. I can't wait when Alicent's children are grown up.
I'm studying all the dragons for this show and I want to see Sunfyre the most. But of course the main event is Vhagar vs. Caraxes! The Battle Above The Gods Eye will be epic!
