One issue here, in much of the world these were not meant for children. And if you read the book, Watership Down you learn this quickly. It always stunned me when American viewers were shocked animation from other locations werent child-friendly. Another that likely should be on here is Wizards.
Edit: Heavy Metal film was produced that way because of how the publication presented the comics. This is why it was done the way it was. And I disagree that South Park is reason it is remembered it is considered one of the greatest films of all-time. It is the reasons The Simpsons and South Park even exists.

I saw Heavy Metal when it first released in 1981 when I was 10. It blew my mind and made me a comic book fan ever since. The movie does have a predominant theme that runs throughout(corruption of humanity) but the best piece in the whole movie is the last story with Taarna. Best animation ever forvher!

Of the three movies in this list that I have seen (some as a pre-teen, none have I had a problem understanding. So I guess if you can t understand them stop being lazy and engage your brain - not all animation is simplistic (ie NOT suitable for Saturday morning children s TV)

There's a lot of symbolism not talked about in the Secret of NIM too.
Some dealing with government and medical experimentation are spooky AF after the revolations of Anthony Fauci and his career. The entirety of It's symbolism goes beyond the mortal world though.

9, Cool World, The Brave Little Toaster, and The Black Cauldron were and are awesome movies! I remember when Cool World came out. I would rent the VHS multiple times because I loved Cool World so freaking much! Never had trouble understanding the plot lines.

Rotoscoping has been around since at least the 70s. The first animated Lord of the Rings, Fire and Ice and other movies from that era used rotoscoping as well as parts of Heavy Metal.

People don't know that Heavy Metal film got a sequel Heavy Metal 2000 produced by Kevin Eastman and starring his wife at the time the late Julie Strain.

I m shocked that Wizards didn t make this list. As an 80s kid, I don t think it got much darker than that (for a non-R-rated kids movie.
