These are the most influential drag icons! For this list, we will be including the pioneers of drag that inspired everyones favorite reality show, and made a name for themselves far before it even began. Weve tried to create a well-rounded list of drag icons from various decades including drag queens, performance artists who heavily influenced drag culture and LGBTQ+ activists who fought to keep drag alive

Boy George was the FIRST AND ONLY drag queen that achieved actual world wide fame, so its ridiculous he's not mentioned more often these days.
He had worldwide no. 1 hit songs which no other queens can come close to achieving even now, even far away in Hong Kong, he was parodied in movies and appeared in magazines as an idol alongside icons such as Cyndi Lauper and Michael Jackson.
His level of fame during the 80s was bigger even than Rupaul ever had been. people forget how big he was as he's stopping doing drag since the early 90s, its such a shame how forgetful pop culture can be to forget such an iconic cross dresser.

If Lypsinka, Charles Busch, and Charles Pierce weren't in the countdown, they should have at least made the Honorable Mentions. Although Miss Understood has revolutionized the commercializing of drag with Screaming Queens, I'd say Varla Jean Merman, Jackie Beat, and CoCo Peru would rank right around her as well. No Heklina or Darcelle XV? Although some of these inclusions impress me, it's very NYC-centric. I'm at the very least glad they weren't foolish enough to name any of the Drag Race girls amongst the pioneers.

Nope don't believe that RuPaul is number one. If anything World of Wonder should be number one for convincing Ru to do the show. If any other drag queen took Ru's place then we would have put them on number one. If for instance we had a drag queen who named themselves Dude Carl it might have been called Dude Carl's drag race and people would have been like RuPaul? No no no silly not the drag queen who had a talk show for a short period of time I said Dude Carl. Ru do give good face but that's about it.

I think you left out the #1 reason for Miss Understood being on this list: She's built her own business, Screaming Queens, to rent drag queens for any occasion. Wildly successful, Screaming Queens now boasts an employment roster of queens from every corner of the US - Because even parties in Wyoming love to have drag queens as their party favours.

I am waiting I waiting I am waiting, ok, check, some good choices, Leigh, Lady B, Divine, yes, and, where is Candy Darling? Or any real acknowledgement of Drag before the 80s? You took RuPauls choices and made a video, is what you did,

As an Australian, Dame Edna should definitely be higher. Shes how most Aussies started knowing about drag and is so influential we named one of Melbournes famous laneways after her (and the sign is covered in lights because of course it is)

I think most of the queens would at least like a different pronoun since they are doing female impersonation after all. Like calling them by she rather than he could seem a bit better and even giving them more respect.

As much as Rupaul has changed drag and its influence on pop culture, she should have been number 2 while Marsha number 1. Without Marsha people like Rupaul wouldnt have the platform that they do today

What about Miss Coco Peru and Jackie Beat? Much more Iconic than some on this list. Coco Peru's bathroom scene in Trick and Jackie Beat's Baby
Got Front and Beaver. are legend.

Pabllo Vittar is going to be in this list in the future!
She is really changing the way people see drag here in Brazil and opening people minds about the lgbtq+ community

How come when they compile these lists, nobody ever mentions Mother Jose of the Imperial Court or Nicole Ramirez-Murray, the current Queen Mother of the Court?
reply

No mention of Craig Russell? Not even an honorable mention on one of the greatest and gifted drag queens to grace the silver screen too. RIP Craig Russell.
reply

Ppl needs to understand that drag race queens are just babies who haven't done much but just enjoyed privilege provided to them by queens on this list
reply

Marsha P Johnson who died under mysterious circumstances in 1992, leading many to believe she was murdered. is what you should have said.
reply

Everyone is mad about Rupaul being number one but drag became mainstream because of Ru. I understand why they placed him there.
reply

I love RuPaul even tho she's transphobic to some degree. I think the Drag queen who started Stonewall uprising deserves #1
reply
