I know this person is not comfirmed but alot of stuff point to spencer reid being on the spectrum examples: trouble with eye contact, repeated hand movments, rambels about things he likes, when he talks about the kid with asperges a character says what about you? And thats not the only time in early seasons one line was talking about how Gideon is one of the best in the bau yet cabt diagnose his autistic leaning student spencer reid more proof of his autism is special intrest in halloween, takes things literal emily talking about the fable of the star and he said its not possible because it would break in the atmosphere the list goes on and on but as someone with autism i see myself in him a bit

My favorite line in this was definitely It's not gonna go away if we call it something else. This is a problem my parents have when it comes to my ASD, OCD, and even my physical illnesses. They always argue with me about second, third opinions, how it's probably something else, or that I shouldn't refer to myself as autistic, and this affects me alot. It's obvious they don't want me to be diagnosed with these lifelong conditions, but they way they go about their denial is damaging. I really like this line because this what I would like to tell them, calling any condition something else isn't going to make it go away, and in a lot of cases, will make it worse

The general portrayal of dr. Shaun Murphy with his small interactions with his medical peers are highly accurate and representative of his level of level of autism however the show the good doctor highly fantasize and even romanticizes the concept of autism I will not deny that people on the spectrum have the ability to visualize things in their heads but to the point where they can break apart intimate detail is not very realistic and is not a proper representation it is highly fantasized and in some cases romanticized I don't think that this was the best decision

so many people think shaun murphy ) (good doctor guy) is a bad representation of autism, just for having savant syndrome, because that's apparently raising the standards for what an autistic person should be like, but people forget that its not representing autism as a whole with just the doctor, its one person, who has savant syndrome. saying he's a bad depiction of autism, is saying that people with autism and savant syndrome are bad representation when its clearly not as some people do have it. thank you for including him.

What happened to The Accountant? I would say it's the best representation of almost unnoticeable autism. Ben Affleck does really well at playing an individual that's on the spectrum in a place where eye contact is still possible, and fluctuations in voice tone are easy enough. Christian Wolf had a similar degree of autism as me. One where it's not severe enough for people to easily recognize it unless they personally know someone who has it, they just assume you're a bit weird, not are nerodivergent.

Yeah parenthood is how I found out I was on the spectrum. Ray Romanos character was pretty similar to me and in the time we were kids they didnt really think autism if the symptoms werent blatant. And my doc explained with adults of my generation it could be tricky to diagnose easily because by adulthood wed have memorized how it was expected we should behave. Wed seem normal, til we werent.
Changed my life, made things a lot clearer and manageable.

The problem with having autistic characters in the media is that they exaggerate how people on the spectrum behave.
Many people with autism seem normal, with some difficulty with loud noises and social skills. Most people you can hardly tell they have autism. That's what we need to see. Fairly normal people who struggle with certain things.
The Good Doctor gets closer to what it's like, but it is still exaggerated.

I have Asperger's syndrome. I try to always try to ignore the things that the negative people have to say about me. I have friends that don't think I have Asperger's or any disability at all. I have a good support system of friends, family members and those that help me in the mental community. I just need a girlfriend. Life has been hard for me since my mother died back in 2018. I take things just day to day.
reply

A few things from an actual autistic. We are not inspirational because we do normal things with a disability. We exist outside of inspiration porn for NTs. Aspergers no longer exists (Im aware that I did at time of diagnosis for some of the listed characters. And please stop referring to us as high/low functioning. Were all autistic and we all have strengths and weaknesses. Functioning labels help nobody

As an autistic person myself, it's so hard to find good representation in the media. It feels like I can never relate to anyone in my favorite movies and television shows. That's why when adult swim came out with the show Million Dollar Extreme: world peace it was so heart warming to see the iconic character Sam Hyde introduced to the world
reply

This is my personal opinion but I always thought Leonardo DiCaprio when he played Arnie from whats eating Gilbert grape and Howard Hughes in the aviator always thought those characters even Howard Hughes had Aspergers or autism low functioning either way he did a good job playing those characters one true and the other fiction

when i told my father i was diagnosed with autism he said ''your supposed to be normal'' ''your not sheldon cooper (i was obsessed with the big bang theory at the time)'' ''so you get paid to be autistic (getting benifits)''. what can i say i have a supportive family and my mother is an alcoholic who is bipolar

I just finished atypical. such an amazing show. Learned a little though not really meant like that. But this is not for young kids in my opinion. the family so reminds me of mine. It made me laugh at times cry at times. All in all a good show for both autistic tones but also for gender identifying tones.
reply

Now the statistics make sense that 75% of autistic characters are white. And also men. Further 95% of autistic characters are played by able bodied actors. That is quite literally like having a man play a woman, or when white people played black people.
reply

Are they actually good representations or inspiration porn versions of what people think having autism is like? Because to me it feels like not being able to speak anyone's language while desperately trying to connect with other people, yet being unable.
reply

As an autistic person, I think it's great to have so many positive portrayals of people on the spectrum. Granted, I wish more of these characters were female, as there are plenty of autistic women (as well as people of other genders) out there.
reply

Remember: it's harmful to use the term aspergers. Asperger was a nazi who thought that people on the severe end of the spectrum didn't deserve to live and that only the ones who seemed to function well did, so we don't really use that term anymore.
reply

I don't agree with Sam from Atypical being here. I found his characterization of autism very offensive and misguided, and it makes neurodivergent people look horrible in my opinion as a teenager who has autism myself.
reply

This is my opinion as an Autistic teenager, autistic people are not inspiration and to me, these characters aren't very realistic. This may be a bias but the only one I like is temple grandin because she's my idol.
reply

Wassup I have autism. I want my own book and show and I have autism. Theres probably 999, 999, 999, 999, 888, 99, 000, 000 people with autism and theres 999, 999, 999, 888, 000, 000, without autism.
reply

I'm 48 seconds into this video and I had to stop to say that your stated criteria for eligibility is what I want to see and hear. Here I go seeing how you fulfil your mission statement!
reply

This is unrealistic as someone with autism is unlikely going to be able to become a doctor as they have to train in the emergency department in a hospital. This causes NTs to have breck downs.
reply

If Sheldon Cooper had Autism, he would be experiencing emotional breakdowns in public situations and Ian Armitage (the actor of Sheldon) would need to work twice as hard
reply

Theres a theory that Dil Pickles from Rugrats is autistic. Signs of this include his poor communication skills with the other babies and his questionable behaviour in All Grown Up
reply

I like how these characters make an attempt to portray people, like me, on the Autism Spectrum. The Autistic child in the 2018 Predator movie is flat out offencive.
reply

I wish Julia had been in Sesame when I was a kid, having a female representation would of been amazing to grow with, not just for me but other autistic girls too
reply

I also absolutly adore Julia. She is amazing. Showing the good and the bad sides of autism.
Pixar gave us Loop in 2020, that was very well made too.

reply

I just happy that autism people are getting respect than the Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon, because I just tired of us being treated like freaks on tv.
reply

We're not inspirational, we're not like Rain Man and most of all, we're people like you and we have our own lives. We don't live solely to inspire you.
reply

Thank you, MsMojo for this tokenistic list. It's good too know that the nondivergent fantasy of us inspires you but that's not our function in life.
